The Hind Heist: The Secret US Operation to Steal the Soviet’s Top Helicopter

Without a doubt one of the coolest aircraft ever fielded, the Mi-24 Hind is something of a flying APC, allowing a squad of Air Assault troops to hit a target while providing close air support. I always thought it was an impressive aircraft and one I’ve always wanted to fly in. The closest I’ve got is an Mi-8 Hip in Afghanistan. A hat tip to my buddy Tactical Hermit out in TX on finding this short documentary on the boys from 160th SOAR stealing one back in the 80s.

I know we got our hands on more. We were at a CONUS base on a support mission and while there loading equipment accidentally discovered they had several types in a hangar. Rather than being chastised and told to hush about it they instead invited our whole unit and showed us all the weak spots. They asked us to teach the weaknesses but keep the location on the downlow till they got established.

Back in the late 80s I saw both a Mi-8 and a Hind flying around Ft Rucker. I had to pull over and stop the car to believe what I was seeing.
