Poor mans DMR build followup – accuracy.

Some time ago I put together what I call my poor mans DMR rifle. I used a simple Palmetto State Armory 16″ midlength upper with a nitrided barrel. It originally had a fixed front sight which I cut down and added a Midwest Industries SLH handguard to. I topped it off with a simple Primary Arms 1-8x scope. The idea was to have a rifle that could pull double duty as a general purpose fighting rifle and also be capable of engaging targets more accurately a little further out when needed. Nothing “special” and not meant to be a precision gun.

I finally got around to during some accuracy testing and thought I’d share the results. Personally, I’m quite happy with it. This rifle is a good addition to our lineup.

“Wind” pushing rounds at 50 yards? In an F5 tornado.

+1 for reminding that it doesn’t have to cost $2500 to do good service, and that if you find the right ammo “match” for the gun, good enough groups are achievable with FN barrels on PSA uppers.

Yes. With 55gr ammo and a strong wind it’s absolutely possible. It won’t move it 6 inches or anything crazy, but small minute shifts are possible.
Just a point of clarification…this is one of PSA’s Nitrided barrels. Those are all done in house by them. Only their CHF chrome lined barrels are made by FN.

I’m not doggin’ you too hard – just the comment in the video about wind pushing that one round on the left that is two inches wide at 50… That’s gonna be a 150 mile an hour wind according to Federal.

Thanks for the clarification – I didn’t know that PSA’s nitrided barrels are done in house. Does that mean that the barrel blanks are FN, or that they are making their own barrels? Does that mean that they are doing the nitride, or are they sending them out to H&M or some third party? No biggie either way – just curious.

Good shooting later in the video. People definitely need to learn that they’ve got to find the ammo that fits their rifle if they’re going to go ‘plug-n-play’ for a DMR/sorta-precision-rifle instead of custom. Three-inch groups at 50 ain’t gonna cut it at 400, but your .75″ groups are definitely something to work with.

        Thanks for taking the time.

To my knowledge, their barrels are done completely in house. I can’t say that for 100% certainty though so don’t quote me on it. I will try to find out though as I’d like to know myself.
