Iran Seizes British Oil Tanker

Iran has seized a British-flagged oil tanker according to Fox News and multiple other outlets. Not much else is known at this time but the vessel was reported in international waters within the volatile Straight of Hormuz. This follows a pattern of belligerence beginning with their attacks on two tankers and downing of a US drone. It is currently a developing situation that doesn’t bode well for any side- one has to wonder at this point what promises the Russians and Chinese have made to Iran for keeping this up.

We may know sooner rather than later.

Oh no more UN and Parliament harsh talk statements forthcoming.
I’m 50/50 on wether they actually act or ask us to act on their behalf. I’m leaning towards “negotiations”.

Welp they just took a second one.

This is way too convenient – like another “WMD in Iraq.” We appear to be ready to go to war over theological and military fictions. We need to avoid it.

What are the Brits thinking? Last week British Marines boarded and took over an Iranian tanker busting sanctions. So here we have a couple of British tankers going through the straits of Hormuz not escorted. Free delivery. WTFO?

One of their destroyers had an incident with an explosives-laden small boat as well a couple of days ago. I don’t think its so much unescorted as its simply a huge challenge to prevent small boat attacks.

Unfortunately I was right. Weak statements from us and the brits meanwhile Iran wins the propaganda war with footage of burka dropping commandos rappelling outta a helicopter.
    Zero action taken.
I’m bout to lose my mind.

Yep. Although to the contrary the President’s statements show that he’s waiting out the social fractures going on in Iran right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some major defections coming in the next few weeks. Not saying that *will* happen, simply that its an option. It would be smarter in the long run to let them collapse on their own than to fight.

Piracy is an act of desperation as well, and Iran is very desperate for cash. In the near term though, the optics aren’t good.

I don’t think they are using piracy as a financial means but rather a show of force. They are obviously fighting outside their weight class but isn’t that what we talk about, train for and prepare for?
Every time they are successful we weaken. The waiting game has not worked, the payoff game didn’t work, the sanctions haven’t worked.
No response is unacceptable even if you want to avoid an all out war.

It definitely is a show of force. Iran is more concerned with regional hegemony versus global dominance, which ironically the Strait of Hormuz is vital to both.

  9. JohnyMac July 21, 2019 at 12:18

Knowing that tensions are high, and risk of piracy even higher, why isn’t there military on these tankers? 1,000-meters out give a warning and at 500-meters you open up?

    • NC Scout July 21, 2019 at 13:51

That’s a complicated question. It has to do with maritime law and civilian vessels versus declared military ones.

  10. Matt in Oklahoma July 21, 2019 at 16:23

Johnymac they are currently trying to put together a worldwide flotilla to do just that but as usual we are moving much faster than others who are willing to participate and others are not wanting to participate so as not to upset others. The US has said we won’t do it alone but even if others join it takes a lot of time cause boats are slow and the seas are big. That and the fact that we and the brits have done nothing which has lead others to ask why they should.

    Reply button isn’t working.

    @NC and JohnyMac:

Another great SEAL author is Benerson Little. In his book on pirates, he describes maritime law during the modern era. Pirates could historically expect no quarter and were seen as a nuisance to be exterminated. Why has this changed? Somali pirates are even shipped to the West and given three hots and a cot now, aren’t they?
