Mods For Running The Kalash

The Kalash should require no introduction to literally anyone in most corners of the world, from the hands of rag-tag guerrilla bands to professional armies, they are in the hands of trigger pullers on every continent and in every warzone at any given time. Love em or loathe em, the Kalashnikov, and specifically the AKM, is the most common weapon in the world. That alone should be reason enough to have one on hand and train with it every so often. And like its contemporaries of the era, such as the AR and the M-14, its still a very worthy option for those going into harm’s way even as time progresses.

I’ve been a fan of the AK for a long time. Way back in the day, when cases of 7.62×39 could be had for $89, I picked up my first WASR-10, bayonet, oiler and sling, and canted sights, for the princely sum of $329 out the door. Ammo still ain’t bad, but the rifles are a lot more today. The only quality AR options were from Colt, DPMS or Bushmaster back then, and they were a grand plus, so for a broke college kid at the time running an AK was practical. And it gave that satisfaction of feeling like a disheveled guerrilla fighting the good fight in parts unknown. Man, have times changed. The AR is everywhere, and often under $500 (or even less if you roll your own). The AK on the other hand went up, but unlike that ratty old Romanian surplus, the imports today are coming off current production stocks and the new WASRs I’ve had a chance to run from Cugir are in a different category in terms of quality. Seeing a lot of completely neglected AKs still run just fine overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, even being consistently combat accurate despite the tens of thousands of rounds fired from them, its a design to be respected even if not ‘speedy and ergonomic in competition’. Yeah…right. The design works, period.

Strela Flash Hider on one of my AKMs. Eliminates all flash and a significant amount of recoil as well.

There’s a few mods I suggest for running the AK. The biggest and easiest one is changing out the muzzle device. Most AKs out there come with a slant brake out of the box, and I consider it not much more than a thread protector. There’s a bunch of good options on the market depending on what you want to do, ranging from actual muzzle brakes to reduce recoil to flash hiders which tame the Kalashnikov’s huge fireball at night. Threads on AKs are either 14×1 Left Hand for most rifles or 24mm Right Hand on Arsenal models. As a matter of preference I normally run a Type 84 birdcage or a Smith Vortex flash hider, which are both effective at night. The best of the bunch, although heavy, is a single baffle design made by Strela that I reviewed a while back.

Taliban go-to-war kit, recovered by my Team somewhere in Afghanistan. Makarov, Radio, and a Kalash.

The next mod is replacing the Trigger Pin Retainer, also known as the ‘Shepherd’s Hook’ with an actual Retention Plate. If there’s one part on the AK that will give you trouble, its that one. Sweeney Engineering makes a good one and its a really simple install. Once its in place, you won’t have to worry about the trigger pins possibly walking out while firing.

With just those two mods your Kalash is gonna be good to go, but there’s a few other mods I do to make it a little more civilized. The first one is taking rubber shrink tubing and melting it onto the magazine latch.

A little piece of shrink tubing covered by electrical tape makes the mag latch more comfortable.

This makes it a lot more comfortable to run during mag changes. The second thing is slightly opening the rear sight with a jeweler’s file and painting the back of the front sight white. This is an old school mod allowing my eyes to pick up the sights a lot faster. And while you can change furniture to suit any other needs you might have, I suggest keeping your training weapons slick (no major mods) to avoid training scars aside from maybe adding a larger grip if you’ve got big hands. The stock AK grips seems to really only fit third world child soldiers anyway, and it makes it more comfortable at least to me.

So with those few simple mods, you can turn the AK from that disheveled peasant gun to a potent and practical weapon. With a pile of decent mags from Magpul or X-Tech and cheap ammo, the Kalash can be a heck of a lot of fun and owning at least one makes sense. It’s not like there’s a huge factory kicking out 50,000 of them down in Venezuela arming our adversaries.

And on that note, got training?

Awesome write up- I love the mag latch mod! I’ll definitely check out the retention plate by Sweeney. If anyone is running the Hungarian variant AMD-65, check out some of the options from AMD-65 TECH out of Texas. In addition to AMD specific mods, they sell recoil buffers and modified bolt hold open safety levers that should work on most AK variants.

Back when I had an AMD, I ran one of their cheek risers. Absolutely loved it.

Nice little additions to the AK,Howard over at looser rounds just did a write up on Zentigo rail systems for ak’s anyone interested,am looking into it and may consider it.I though a bit on the expensive side did get some of the X-tech mags and seem very nice and so far(few 100 rounds)have worked fine.I did not put em thru the tests you did torture wise(am sure I will though not on purpose but bone head move at some point)and got a few for friend who also likes them very much, they just feel and seem sturdy and well built. As for the shepherds hook really thought that was a thing of the past,as you say, replace that piece of S!$T,figured everyone did by now, really is a wonder on a otherwise simple for most part yet decent rifle.

NC,can you add some thoughts on mounts worth considering for glass ect.

That’s gonna be another post coming up.

Waste of time and money. I’d buy ammo with that jack.

Some Ak’s don’t come with side mount scope rails. Options for optics are limited and optics make life much better with ANY weapon. The Ultimac Rail that replaces the AK gas tube is BOMB PROOF. Couple it with an Aimpoint T1 Micro and you have 21st century sighting equipment!

      Agreed.

A compatriot now has my pick of the litter WASR (from 6 spread-out on the ground with me). Key thing is straight front-sight block. After that it’s a few simple tweaks. The 3 things back then I did but which have little cool factor are the Shepherd’s crook improvement, a properly threaded version of an A2 FH (forget where I got that), and I had Jim Fuller separate and then pin, the op-rod/gas-piston affair which gets welded into a single piece on many WASR’s when the 922r “must have US parts” doctrine gets complied with. That wasn’t/isn’t how the AK is supposed to be. There’s some pivot to it because the 2 things are pinned and helps the piston find where it’s supposed to be going under all manner of adverse conditions of cleanliness – something that a warped weld-job friom Century won’t fix. (Note that not all need that but if yours is sluggish take a look at that item.) That AK ran and still runs from -30 to 100°F with a variety of ammo. As suggested, take care of the critical things first. The rest is likely personal adornment or not needed.

      Looks like a good option.

The AK rocks. You neglected to mention one plus.

The Mild Steel Core 124 Grain ammo is second to none.

Combined with an RPK Type, standard issue Bipod, and a 75 round Drum, and you have yourself a weapon in a category of its own.

Capable of destroying nearly any house, vehicle, or piece of equipment.

My Crew runs these and they are AWESOME.

Truly a weapon of war. Not a glorified PDW like the AR. I run AR’s so don’t hate. Very accurate and low recoil. But the RPK with Drums is unbelievable.

    • NC Scout October 10, 2019 at 18:34

I had an M72 RPK at one time. Very good weapon. ARs and AKs serve two different, distinct roles. For the guerrilla, the AR should be used in a DMR role and placed in the hands of experienced guys. The AK performs very well in woodland fighting.

I did the same thing with my mag release using Plasti-Dip; same-same. Works great.

green lacquer ammo from sg is awesome. others: 1) debur the rifle, sand / file all sharp edges & corners 2) round the safety front end allows working the bolt with safety lever up, i.e. moves the safety down 3) BHO mags or mag followers 4) magpul k2 pistol grip with storage for spare parts 5) folding stock with storage (ar buffer) 6) rpk rear sight 7) add white paint strip to rear sight notch like frontsight 8) rs regulate mount w/ lightweight 1-4 or 2-7 low power variable with elevated see-thru mounts for open sights (kind of handy) 9) norrels moly resin coating 10) J-mac gas block 11) white light 12) bore snake 13) 20 rd mags 14)14 rd mags (i.e. reduce follower height in 10 rd mags)

After much hemming and hawing, I threw down some $30 awhile back and bought a US Palm Co. Tango Down Battlegrip for my AK and despite its non-military lines I found it to be comfortable enough that I bought two more for my domestically produced sporting rifles. I did have a SAW grip on the AK for awhile and it was nice, but for reasons unknown, the Tango Down grip became my model of choice. Its just damn comfortable. Ive read that the company folded and Ive read that someone else is making the TD grip. I haven’t checked recently, but regardless, if you can get your hands on one I would highly recommend it. The most recent one I bought I couldn’t get in my choice of color but a can of spray paint fixed that up to match the rifle. I prepped the grip just like any other painting project and the finish has held up very well.

That TD grip is top notch. I have one when it was marked US Palm, and Jeremy Deadman of XTech Tactical is producing them now.

The Flaming Pig is same-same for SAE threaded barrels. Same price, same effects. Tames a 16″ FAL. The mag release issue required the MM kit(https://www.mm-industries.com/product/mrl-magazine-release-lever-kit/), it now takes every drum and mag I put in it. Very smooth and positive.
