I’m goin to figure out how to fix that. Believe it or not I’m kinda flying blind through the tech end of this. But thanks for the heads up!

You mention that the Baofeng DM-1701 has an encryption ability. How secure is this mode?

It’s better than nothing and if used the way we cover in class, trying to break it is kinda futile. It’s a nine 32 digit key cypher, which ain’t bad. In my earlier reply I mixed these up with the DPMR units that I’ve been using for a few years now. They share the same codeplug with competing DMR units.

    Matt,

For comparison to the Baofeng DM-1701, the TYT MD-380s and 390s have a 32 character hexadecimal string. So, if NCS is saying that nine isn’t bad, you can do the math for the additional strength of 32 for the 380s/390s. However, like NCS mentioned, you’re unlikely to break either of them in real-time. Just make sure you change up the strings when you change the rest of your SOI and you should be OK.

NCS, I couldn’t format this reply under Matt’s original question. Is it possible for you to place it there in your admin mode? Thanks.

Actually, a correction to my earlier answer. I was in the middle of something else- the DPMR key is nine digits, the DMR is indeed 32. It shares codeplugs with the TYT units.

  6. […] NC Scout has his most recent podcast up, and I had intended to link this earlier.  It’s well worth the 40 minutes.  I like his style – humble and unassuming. […]

Sorry for being ignorant about digital radios, but is there such a thing as a mobile or base station radio that you’d recommend to work with these handhelds? Thanks so all of the good information.

That’s why we’re here brother! Look into Anytone- they make a DMR mobile radio.

  8. Kilo January 9, 2020 at 21:53

    Matt,

You can go with NCS’ Anytone suggestion, but I’m not sure if the encryption would be compatible. Maybe NCS can chime in on that.

If it is not compatible, you can go with an amplifier. Something like this would work with a hand-held such as the Baofeng or TYT already mentioned.

Just make sure it is compatible with the band you want to use and digital. There are multiple selections for this item, configuration wise.
