USS Theodore Roosevelt Under Quarantine

200 sailors assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the Chinese Virus, leading Captain Brett Crozier to quarantine the entire ship. This is a major blow to naval readiness- taking out an entire aircraft carrier without having to fire a shot. Not good.

Question: (not being snide or callous) How many are actively sick? This is another control study if there is not many people coming on or going off.
Just because an announcement is made (200!), it is not filling in the rest of critical numbers. How many on the ship? When was the first positive identified, or show symptoms? How many in active treatment? Fill in the rest of the blanks of other relevant questions and answers.
Prayers for our sons & daughters on the front lines.

According to them, 200 have tested positive. Which means it’s at least twice if not four times that that will become positive in the next few days. A carrier has a crew of around 5k. As anyone who’s lived in tight conditions knows, this WILL spread like wildfire on a Navy ship.

Ok. They are all healthy individuals, have been vaccinated for many things (?), have access to more than adequate food and water. Hopefully good air exchange in quarters. Other things that could go against them is where they are in the world, hot /cold wise. If they are in an area that would have air conditioning running, I would not see that as a good thing. I’ve never served, so I don’t know how that is. But I do farm, and I never/rarely run AC. Which seems to have prevented me from getting summer colds that coworkers do, as they sit in the cab with it on.
5000/200=0.04. When did they start testing? when was first case found? What is the condition of positives? What other illness can be present? Is there exchange of people on/off that could bring more on?

      All good points.

Well, you gotta go back to when the ship left port. How advanced was the pandemic in the country at the time and shouldn’t someone have forseen this and acted accordingly? It evidently did not occur to any of the MBA and Doctorate geniuses wearing stars that this was a distinct possibility or they would have quarantined the entire crew ashore in a secure area for at least a month before embarking. That means no families, no girlfriends, no (God help us), boyfriends, no leaving the quarantine area, no nothing.
Of course the teenie bopper “warriors” wearing the latest Navy cammoflage ensemble want to go grind on the beach at spring break, and they would whine and not re-enlist. The married older ranks want to see their families, and they would whine too. The media would pick up on this whining and whine themselves and then the Congress would respond to the whining and……well, you know the rest. So the stars and the staff wienies, even if they had thought of this ahead of time would be guilty of the one thing that is worse than massive incompetence, moral cowardice. and they did nothing. Wonder how long it will take the female crew to realize they can get out of the next month of forced confinement if they suddenly get pregnant? After all it is wimminsk is wonderful month , right?

Seems like the strike group had a really good reason to spend 5 days in Danang a few weeks back. You cant cancel something like that over a virus.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt arrived Thursday in Vietnam, becoming only the second U.S. aircraft carrier to make a port call there since the fall of Saigon in 1975.

The carrier, accompanied by the guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, steamed into Danang, where they were met by Vietnamese and U.S. government and military officials, according to a 7th Fleet news release. Waiting to greet the vessels were Adm. John C. Aquilino, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink.

The port call by the Roosevelt and its strike group, a total of 6,500 military personnel, marks 25 years since the two former foes normalized their diplomatic relations.

Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, announced Tuesday that the Roosevelt would stop in Vietnam.

“It’s true. We do have TR pulling into Danang this week,” he said in response to a reporter’s question during 2020 West, a naval conference in San Diego.

The BBC’s Vietnamese language online news site reported that the Roosevelt would stay in port five days. The strike group crew is expected to take part in community service projects, sports competitions and other events, according to 7th Fleet.

Nice OpSec going on in the ol .mil this day in age. Too many enemies (to count) have gutted this nation.

I couldn’t agree more. This is not the kind of thing they should be advertising, especially in the Pacific.

The CNO stated on television two days ago, the ship was “full operational”. I don’t for a second believe a full A/C carrier isn’t ready and can’t do it’s mission. Someone’s playing games. Most likely, China.

    • NC Scout April 2, 2020 at 11:56

She lost 2/5 of of her crew. There’s no way she’s fully mission capable.
