“Unintended Consequences”

In the fall of 2010, my brother, two friends who were framers during the summer and ski instructors in the winter, and myself built our 1,500-sf log cabin now known as Kookish Kabin. Caught up in the mass layoffs of the early Obama administration I found myself up at the cabin installing plumbing -those early cold morning walks to the ‘necessary’ had gotten old – Routing wall sockets rectangles into the log walls for future electric outlets, painting, et cetra, my entertainment after the Aladdin lamps had been lit was listening to our Sirius radio and reading.

Our internet was a Verizon ‘hot spot’ that cost $30.00 a month which produced less than 1-Mpbs we used to send and receive emails, catch up on Unchainedpreppers.com, and on good nights stream a movie or old TV show. With nothing to read I put out a call for book suggestions. I received two in PDF format and to this day read each one yearly. The first was John Ross’s novel, Unintended Consequences. The other was David Crawford’s Lights Out.

Today I will write about Ross’s novel and in a future post I will write to Crawford’s novel.

In my mind’s eye John Ross’s novel was an incredible eye-opening read. The story could fit into the 1990’s as well as 2020 like Matt Bracken’s trilogy Enemy’s Foreign and Domestic – Both authors are timeless.

Although the plotline is very good and a page turner, the best part of the book is the well documented history of the continued criminalization of gun ownership in the United States. That alone is worth your time to download and read.

Except for one paragraph that the FBI requested Ross change before the second edition came out, it is all intact. In Canada, the sale of the book is banned along with many other countries. Once you read it you will understand why. This is why first editions are going for as high as $499.00 in the United States.

Please copy this book to your computer as it will probably disappear in the not so near future.

Yes, it is a classic read. We have multiple copies of a few books, and “Unintended Consequences” is one of those few. The intent is to have a loaner copy and a keeper copy. Thus far, the loaner has always returned. And interestingly enough, everyone who has borrowed the book has ended up purchasing a copy for themselves. I keep hoping that Mr. Ross will write a sequel. And the book has spawned the eternal question WWHBD?

One of the best books out there dealing with the excesses of Big Government

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 15:45

Jim K, and today’s Chinese Virus excesses by state governors. Just using the Pennsylvania Constitution, the legislative branch is to make statute, while the executive branch enforces said statutes.

      Thanks Brother

Unintended Consequences by John Ross is a fantastic book and a must read! The book starts off somewhat slow while the author establishes the historical context and threads that will tie everything together. John Ross is a master storyteller which makes the book hard to put down. It is a historically based fiction that will open your eyes to what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen, unless….; read the book to find out.

      Amen Truth in Tension…Amen.

What was the changed paragraph? I read this a few years ago, but don’t know what edition it was. Also, given some the content in the book that would put off some people I know, has anyone made a copy of just the sections about the gradual criminalization, i.e. the parts aboythe NFA, GCA, and Hughes Amendment?

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 15:42

      Yeah Wallace….

I should forewarn folks, this is not a book if you get offended with some graphic sexual prose. It is a story and sometimes you spice up a story to sell the more important message. I do not know if anybody cut out the historical info in the book but to do that would border on what former VP Biden practices, plagiarism

      Thanks Brother

Nice! Another classic preserved. Thank you.

I foolishly lent my first edition to a friend and haven’t seen it for 20 years.

      Karl Dahl…WTF!

Hey I have a bridge in Brooklyn that you might be interested in…LOL. Yeah stuff happens, it’s life.

Tom Sherry wrote a series that started with a massive quake in the Pac NW and goes from there. very good reads and mostly still timely, even down to the chinese flu… would complement the authors books from above very well. an overview here, https://www.goodreads.com/series/170530-deep-winter and can also be found on kindle

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 15:13

      Agreed Allan.

I have read the series and MrsMac just finished the third one in the series of four. I thought the fourth one was lame, so I have not ordered it for her. She only reads hard books no digital.

In a previous article about raising chickens for eggs, I made reference to his first book, “Deep Winter”. Good series.

I have to ask: what did the FBI request to be changed in that one paragraph??

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 15:08

Mike, check out my response to Jefferson Thomas. \”/

  9. Jefferson Thomas June 10, 2020 at 14:15

curious to know which paragraph was changed…

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 15:08

      Jefferson Thomas,
I knew it at one time but I forget the page and paragraph. It had to do with the building of a bomb. He changed the verbiage to devalue the recipe he posted.

      Good question,

I had bumper stickers made, 100 of them
    ‘What Would Henry Bowman Do?’
I give them out to people as a way to get them to read the book

    • johnyMac June 10, 2020 at 18:25

      LOL Pineslayer. Great idea.

What do you and other AP readers think about coming up with a 2×3″ AP logo? Specifically our revised Staurogram/Tau-Rho logo. Would folks post it in the rear window of their vehicle?

      Thanks Brother…

Don’t know where I first heard of this but the almost statewide library system had a copy somewhere in South Georgia. I requested it and loved it. That copy is no longer out there but I bought my own and have read it any number of times. Getting ready to do it again in light of the current situation. Another good one is Stephen Coonts’ “LIberty’s Last Stand”. Just for perspective, younger readers should try, “When I Was a Kid, This Was a Free Country” by G.Gordon Liddy.
