800 trained in Syria? Yeah… I’m thinking more like 8,000…
800 wouldn’t even be worth talking about.
    1 whole battalion sounds wrong.
Let’s be real, it was probably 10 battalions.

Johnny, you could be correct, but over 20 years ago I had connections through the music world to some antifa types – acquaintances of friends. Their big mobilizations at the time were mass protests – Toronto, Canada for one of the G summits (there have been so many) and the WTO in Seattle, 1999.

The standard approach was for a few seasoned guys to go to training camps, and then come back and teach their crew. Because they think and organize in terms of cells, the idea was that the guys with the solid training would lead the training, then one or two stand-outs would become junior leaders.

There really aren’t that many in the street-level leadership cadre. If you look at Portland, OR for example, there are maybe 30 educable street fighters and leaders, 200 street scum who will be there every night for drugs and action, and a few hundred novices of varying quality and commitment who have jobs and a roof over their heads. Operating in Portland is EASY and FUN right now. When it gets hard, huge numbers will fade away. 25 year old chicks talk tough, and will always be agitating males to Do Something, but they lose the taste for battle when they get their teeth knocked out.

The protests/riots all over the country get their numbers from, you guessed it, all over the country. If one examines the arrests from various protests/riots, this plays out. It’s a good idea to look through these reports, seeking people from one’s own AO, for future reference.

Antifa’s power comes from lefties embedded in the establishment, and those who will kick money their way and give them political cover. That’s it. I’m not saying to underestimate them – far from it. Rather, their successes are entirely dependent upon the support of the establishment and the police who they decry. See: Charlottesville.

800 guys in Syria is actually quite a lot, if you look at all of North America’s antifa groups, given the model explained above.

Antifa can organize 20,000 people in Europe. I find it hard to believe that ONLY 800 westerners went to Syria.
I’m from the D.C./Baltimore Area, trust me, I have been around these guys since HS. I know they are serious.

Thanks for the comment. This is good info, and matches what I have. Will consider.

I would wager that the YPG simply never had the capacity to take more than 800 people. The other militias in Syria won’t touch them. They’re usually non-contributing dregs who went there for a few months and took a few shots.

The number of “westerners” in Syria, i.e. Muslim children of immigrants, is definitely a different consideration.

They didn’t want that many westerners, either. Several of the volunteers rapidly overstated their welcome and by this time in 2018, had mostly become PNG in the region.

That said they didn’t need many to be trained.
