E-Book: Capture the Magic of Six Meters, by Jim K5ND

Courtesy of DXZone, here is a free e-book titled “Capture the Magic of Six Meters”. If you are not following along at DXZone, you are missing some GREAT information. Shout out to Jim K5ND for releasing the E-Book for free – you can see his site at https://www.k5nd.net/

Have you ever wondered about the “Magic” of Six Meters? After all, you’ve probably pressed the six meter button on your rig and failed to find any magic or even any other stations. If that’s the case, you’ve identified the “tragic” of the band. But without tragic there would be no magic.

The subtitle of this book states: average equipment + limited antennas = exceptional QSOs.

It really doesn’t take much on six meters — your existing HF+6 meter rig along with a simple antenna, even a dipole, will work. In this book you’ll find out how I know that dipoles work along with how to build one of your own.

This book will also provide plenty of insight into how you, too, can “Capture the Magic of Six Meters.” It covers propagation, equipment, software, antennas, awards and contesting, as well as assistance in finding the magic.

BTW — If you’d rather read the book online along with lots of links to additional information, you can find it at 6 Meter DXing Guide – Getting Started on the Magic Band. You can also find a presentation at Six Meter Presentation @ ARRL Learning Network. Lots of ways to get this information and get on the band.

    Kilo Five November Delta;
    Thank you!
    I loved this piece.

    Long-time HF talker (military) and sitting for my Tech & General in two weeks (wish me luck!).
    I’m really looking forward to getting back in the HF spectrum, and all HAM bands available (Victor/Uniform) for comms after internet-down and repeater-down scenarios (coming soon?).

    Agree, 6m is incredibly useful. I once, with a 10W radio using a simple 10ft whip antenna, reached about 10 miles easily through concrete buildings, hills, and dense swampy vegetation. And we could have gone quite a bit further! Imagine what you could do with a home brew directional antenna like a moxon or yagi!

    Six is over looked. It is the best VHF band for mobile relay (Truck to Truck, Base to Truck, Repeaters). I am a longtime (30+ Years) six meter DXer and have worked Jim on Six and on Satellites. Six meters is band that can pay off but you really do need good antennas and lots of time listening to be effective. All this magic band stuff is promoted by the ARRL for noobs and it doesn’t give real picture of what it takes to really get the performance out of the band. They tune in and don’t instantly find someone and then move on because “No one is out there”. It is not like 2 meters as far as the operators the are on it. It should be a band that The True American and company uses for comm as well as High band VHF and UHF. Less traveled. There is not a flood of cheap shit Chink radios on the band clog it up. So it is good starter article and I hope inspires one to use 6 Meters. I like this site because there is a lot of info about comms for the true American.

    73 hope to hear you on six meters

    Excellent article.

    Yes, 6 meters can be very useful, especially with ssb or digital modes. Some of the old timers may remember the Kachina project “dream” radio that came out many years ago. It would operate 26-30 mhz and 50-54mhz, am or ssb with 75 watts output. It was experimental and the FCC would not approve it but they can still be found on the collectors market for a pretty penny.

    I love 6! I used to live two miles from the beach and could look south out over the ocean from my roof. With 10 Watts and a dipole I could work all the way to Brazil (probably transequatorial), but typically down 1000 miles or so to Florida on e-skip.

    The band usually opens for about 2 weeks in January in addition to the usual June – August openings.
