On future building material shortages, or specifically lumber, one of the best rural business opportunities is the “portable sawmill.” These are mounted on a trailer, and use a big band saw that goes back and forth over a stationary log to produce boards to your specific dimensions. The owner of the portable bandsaw and the land owner don’t exchange any money, they just split the lumber that they have produced. The boards that the land owner keeps are stacked in rickets to dry and cure for a period before they are used for new construction. If you have some trees you might want to convert into construction lumber, you might want to contact a portable sawmill owner. And if things get really bad, as in no gasoline or diesel to run the trucks or the portable sawmill, it’s worth considering that sawmills using big heavy circular blades have been in use for 100s of years, even before electricity and engines. Nails and screws, they should be bought in massive quantities now while they are readily available and relatively cheap.

Agreed. My neighbor did that when I was growing up, and has since retired a wealthy man.

That is quite right. Anyone pay attention to the lumber price and availability issues ever since a couple of months into covid?
My sawmill will be delivered in late March or early April. I have lots of trees just waiting to become lumber, and several outbuildings begging to be built. The homestead needs to grow.
Keep ypur powder dry (and your sawmill supplied with sharp blades),

I agree with the insecurities of the Signal app. Most, if not all, of the current widely-used encryption apps have been compromised in one way or another.
I personally prefer Protonmail and leapchat.org for my private messaging needs. What’s better?

      Those are both great.

Granville also makes a chainsaw attachment called the Alaskan Mill, and Haddon makes the Lumbermaker. I have both. They’re both pretty simple to use, although you’ll get a workout. The Haddon is more portable and can run on a smaller saw, the Alaskan is ultimately more effective.
Both allow a great deal of flexibility, as you can break up a tree on-site, the trunk of a really large tree doesn’t have to be loaded or moved, and there’s no size limit or length limit to the lumber you make. Only constraint is the length of the bar on the saw.
But the portable mills are much nicer to use
