Guerrilla Logistics By Sig357

For someone looking for a role in the resistance auxiliary they might consider logistics.
Undoubtedly logistics will be the difference between victory and failure of any guerrilla campaign. For supporters of the movement not able to physically fight, participation in the logistical chain would fulfill a vital and necessary role.
What would be some the problems and potential solutions for logistical challenges during a guerrilla or civil war? Are there any historical answers to these questions? I encourage you to study these
references now and develop your own plans based on the PACE acronym.
The resources linked below and more can be found more than one way including the internet, (don’t
forget to use your VPN and free Wi-Fi) some are available at booksellers such as Amazon. Remember to check your local used bookstore or ABE. Also, you will find some out of print titles using your local
public library and interlibrary loan. If you are ever questioned about your reading preferences, you could suggest you are helping (fill in name of a local communist) prepare background for an upcoming Peace and Justice conference at the local university. Guerrilla logistics is the science of planning and carrying out the movement and maintenance of guerrilla forces. Logistics provides the resources of combat power, positions those resources on the battlefield, and sustains them throughout the execution of operations. Logistics encompasses a wide range of actions and the relationships among those actions, as well as the resources that make those actions possible. These actions are all given purpose and definition by the larger art of war, of which logistics is a critical and inseparable part.

Most importantly read this great primer by JSOU on Soviet lessons learned: Logistic Support and
Insurgency by Turbiville
First person accounts from WWII recount Partisan struggles for logistical support and are well
documented in: Beacons in the Night by Lindsay and Special Operations Executed by Lees
From the Pacific theater, Col. Wendell Fertig harassed the Japanese in the Philippines. You can read the details here: They Fought Alone by Keats
In the modern era many lessons can be learned from breakup and subsequent civil war in the former
Yugoslavia. This Q&A by Selco (originally posted some years ago) provides a glimpse into civil war
conditions and the daily struggle to find the necessities of life.

If you don’t know what to do to support the movement start a vegetable garden right now. Food is plentiful today but maybe scarce during times of trouble and gardening requires knowledge and effort. There is a lengthy learning curve to successful gardening and food storage. Governments have historically used food access as weapon against rebels and indigenous peoples. Best to start early.
Storage: Perhaps it is time to build that out of the way root cellar? Building a root cellar provides a great way to store the fruits of your gardening efforts as well as some additional storage. Lots of ideas on the internet. See also this text on caching: SF TC31-29
Funding: Resistance movements need cash (or Bitcoin). Guerrillas from the Irish to ISS have raised
funds thru a multitude of ethnic or religious “charities” and other NGO’s. How about using “Go Fund
Me?” Governments have often funded overtly and covertly favored guerrilla movements as their
proxies.
Manufacturing: Just after WWII, during Israel’s struggle for independence from British rule, Israel
developed a clandestine manufacturing industry producing small arms and ammunition. Here is an
example of a secret ammunition factory built to support Israeli guerrillas.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayalon_Institute
Here is some recent history by the US State Department which sponsored a study of small arms and improvised weaponry production: Small Arms & Improvised Weapons
Transportation: Material handling is a big part of effective logistics. Getting the right stuff to the right place at the right time to be useful. Movement and delivery techniques may be overt or covert. Study and learn from smugglers. Here is an example of drug smugglers using Ultra Light aircraft to move their product: Mexican Cartel Smuggling. Out of the ordinary means of transportation may be used including animals. Pack Animal Operations, ATVs and UTV’s have become a staple of SOF and are widely used in ranch and farming as well as recreational activities.
Finally, make sure you are an asset not a burden to the movement. You should ensure that your family’s food and medical needs are planned for and on hand right now. Use that stimulus check wisely.

Whoever wishes to avoid getting dizzy must try to grasp the laws of motion governing the swing. Because what we are facing is clearly a pendulum swing of history, from absolutism to democracy, from democracy to absolute dictatorship.
    —Arthur Koestler, Darkness at Noon
Whoever enters into opposition against a dictatorship must accept civil war as a means. Whoever shies away from civil war must abandon opposition and accept the dictatorship.

I’ve been riding horses recreationally since my daughter began taking lessons a couple years ago. I’m definitely not an expert and there’s a bit to learn beyond just getting on and giving the animal a little kick. Animal health, availability of forage, and proper packing are key, as the Army FMs state. Another good thing about horses and mules is they will alert to danger, usually before humans.
Fuel availability, vehicle noise, and the ability to operate at night are considerations for ATVs, in my opinion. Whether hauling supplies or doing recon, I’d want a super quiet muffler and NVGs. Or, depending on the terrain in the AO, a battery powered golf cart may also be suitable.

One of the best resources I have come across is The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War by and Lester W. Grau and Ali Ahmad Jalali…
“Much of the Soviet combat in Afghanistan was a fight for control of the road network. Soviet security of the Eastern LOC (lines of communication) required 26 battalions manning 199 outposts, patrolling the LOCs or escorting convoys. The more-open Western LOC required three battalions. More than three-fourths of Soviet combat forces were routinely involved in security missions. DRA (Democratic Republic of Afghanistan) forces were also tied down in LOC and area security. The Mujahideen ability to interdict the LOC was a constant concern to the Soviets and prevented them from maintaining a larger occupation force in Afghanistan.”
    …And so much more.

So many folks are “eager” for Civil War 2.0 (not here – it seems that many commenters have witnessed firsthand similar events and understand what is truly at stake/risk), but I do not think they understand the entirety of civil strife and the secondary, tertiary, and on order of effects that would have.
    Very excellent primer…

Other Side of the Mountain is an excellent reference. Picked up a copy from a shop keeper in Kandahar. They’re quite proud of that book.

Mine was procured in Bagram… It was fascinating to read in pretty much the same location as where many of the patrols and flights originated from decades before…
The present direction of the SJWs brings to mind the rise of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda during and after the Afghan Civil War… “The rules we establish must be followed… if you want peace.”
Their peace was nothing but, and their rules were merely thinly-veiled justifications for brutality.

I met COL Grau at a talk he gave at the University of Kansas while I was there. Then, he mailed me signed copies of “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” and “The Other Side of the Mountain” while I was in Kabul. loaned “Bear” to a colleague and never saw it again.
          Great books, cool guy.

            That’s outstanding.

Get lots of road maps, here in NC roads on top of roads. In many places cutting across a field puts you on the other road, rather than drive a mile or so up and make that turn. Its something we used to do as kids, back when we were allowed to play in the dirt. A 4 x4, a dirt bike and a small boat, one can get to lots of places fast. Look at the roads around the Catawba River System. Between the dams. No wonder bootleggers used to love operating here. Just a little planning and scouting out NOW. I would avoid cities like Charlotte, that belt loop can also be used to keep you in. It is a Park Ape Reserve.
