Yes. I don’t have any HAMs in my close circle of family and friends who I can pester with newbie questions.
      Josh does a great job.

        Good information, thanks.

Just saw this article and haven’t read, but I received my latest baofeng from amazing on Saturday and it’s permanently locked to legal Ham frequencies only. Buyer beware.

You need to update the firmware.
The DMRs are locked to nonsense frequencies too. Until you update the firmware.

^^^^^. This right there, it’s a huge deal. You don’t want to lose the ability to monitor those people using the bubble-pack freqs in your area. Plus the ability to use the MURS freqs is real helpful.

Maybe, just maybe, some light programming via computer can get around that. I’m doubtful, I’ve tried it with a newer 10w Wouxon and it didn’t work.

I’d gotten a Wouxon KG-UV9T(plus) in summer of 2020. It was all good, so I ordered another one a few months later from the same vendor. It was good also, then it crapped the bed. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, the vendor sent me another. It turned out to be “compliant.” Programming software did not help. (During negotiations for return of the useless bad radio, the Chicom vendor suggested that, due to my expense of sending back their bad product, that I instead should gift the radio to a friend and they’d send me $20).

This makes sense. There was some sort of legal case against them because they didn’t comply with FCC regulations. I suppose they finally sold all the old school ones and are now importing the FCC compliant models.

This is good stuff. I enjoyed the APRS demonstration.
      What an amazing technology.

      • NC Scout October 12, 2021 at 16:40

        Stay away from APRS.

        • Johnny Paratrooper October 12, 2021 at 18:03

          Roger on all counts.

          • NC Scout October 12, 2021 at 18:19

The equipment for APRS is useful; I cover it in Advanced RTO. But APRS itself is a huge no-no. Just like ATAK.

          • Johnny Paratrooper October 12, 2021 at 18:21

Yes, I just read up on it. It seems cool, but then you have the magic word “Tactical” next to the words “Global” and “Everyone”.

    From another source-
    FYI…..
Baofeng Critical Info: Was up late discussing radio info with factory reps and wholesale/retailers on WeChat while the Oct holiday is going on in China. A few important details to pass along.

    1) As of June 30th 35% of Baofeng factory workers were laid-off with more lay-offs this month due to chip and other material shortages. It is possible within the next few months they will have a 50% workforce production. This is ALL Chinese manu’s not just Baofeng.

    2) Due to these shortages some models are discontinued (unknown if just temp or permanently) So far all Baofeng DMR version radios are out of production.

    3) Items shipped to Amazon warehouses via ocean freight placed in June on THE SHIPS are still sitting off ports unable to unload in the USA. Unknown when they will be unloaded it is possible NOT till NEXT YEAR !!! they are being told.

    4) Price increases , We already knew this going to happen BUT the Chinese side Baofeng price increases might be $5-$25 per radio. Not something to cry about. However, IF no radios are being made or in low QTY and shipping is slow well guess what. THOSE Ebay and Amazon sellers might just figure out they can jack the prices up as high as they want. Expect this to happen.

Bottom line if you are thinking about a spare antenna, battery a radio don’t dilly-dally around much longer. Rumors are floating around of some companies that make some popular radios and accessories we discuss in here actually going out of business. It’s that bad.

Thanks for this. I bought a Baofeng UV5R many many months ago when Matt Bracken was telling us to buy two or three of them so we would have a way to communicate, especially if the cell towers were shut off. Got a car charger for it too. Then I got sidetracked and never fired it up to set it up. Thanks. I have to get it done. Perfect timing for me to see this now.

You have to update the FirmWare to unlock all the features.
At least, you did on my batch.
