A good one for stockpiling is goya sazon packets. They really doctor up rice and beans. Like these: https://www.webstaurantstore.com/goya-3-52-oz-sazon-seasoning-packets-box/102GOYA3779.html

I was able to buy a number of boxes of candy canes after Christmas last year and have those in the basement; I will have Christmas no matter what! BTW, I also have put together a couple little gatherings of thanksgiving meals if all goes to heck: canned turkey spam, dollar bags of mashed potatoes, cans of yams, cans of cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie mix with a couple pie crusts…will will have Thanksgiving no matter what the entity in Dee See decrees! Alas Babylon!

Due to excess salt in ramen packaging, we use only about a 1/3 to 1/2 of the packet per unit. So we end up with quite a few extra packets, foil contained, lightweight and small portioned for small family meals or used as described at beginning. Many different flavors to avoid appetite fatigue.

Depending on the diversity quotient where you live…Asian and Mexican grocery stores are great for stocking up on items like dried beans rice lard and various canned goods.

It would never happen in today’s world, but when I was in junior high school here in Florida in the 1960’s, Alas Babylon was on our required reading list for English class.

I’ve always thought of ‘Iron Rations’as the minimum protein & carbs to keep you going – but not requiring stopping & cooking. Think: Pemican and/or Jerky and Hardtack. Add water and you’re good to go for a day’s travels and/or battle.

Of course – having a luxury like tea, instant coffee, bullion, and the mentioned hard candies or even some gorp/trail mix would be like heaven after the privations of an extended trek or escape & evasion scenario.
