Fun Facts Wednesday – Presidential Pardons & Clemency
Just for kicks and giggles, I am going to attempt to post Fun Facts on Wednesdays going forward. Here is this weeks Fun Facts.
Looking back to 1974, the year I was first allowed to vote here is a list by President of pardons or granted clemency by presidents of the United States.
Plenary power to grant pardon’s or issue reprieves to individuals arrested or convicted of federal crimes was given to the President of the United States in the Constitution. Article II Section 2 Clause 1,
The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States; he may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any Subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices, and he shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.
