Thanks to the Chinese Virus many folks scholarly pursuit of a ham radio license or a higher rating has been put on hold. I received an email the other day announcing a Zoom radio license class for Technicians, General, and Extra levels,

The classes (s) will be held over a four night period for three hours between 1800 to 2100 hrs ET each of those nights.

The test will be given online the fifth night.

The nights are December 14th through 17th. With the test the following night.

If you are interested in attending this class send a RSVP to…

I just signed up for the Extra class.
No complaining, “get ‘er done”!

NC and Co, please opine of opsec as it relates to Ham licenses, a lot old Ham Fudds, Have terrible attitudes and are bootlickers, they will be the first to pull the names and addresses of all local licensees and turn you into the gestapo,

one can look open source online all licensed HAMS so if you are training and they are listening from their basement ham shacks they can easily DOX you? please give us some thoughts

Register it to a PO Box.

Even with a PO box, which is a good idea, you can still be doxed by some. There are far more sophisticated folks listening to those frequencies too, so use it the same way you’d use your phone. Only for “normal” life activities.

In this case, maybe you’re a geek that loves electronics and RF. Maybe you like hiking or off-roading and want to use your Ham license while you’re out doing that. Don’t discuss anything controversial over the air. You just love your hobbies and you’re a good citizen who wants to follow all the rules. Blend in.

The license is so you can gain valuable experience with frequencies you’d normally get in trouble using during normal times.

You can save the clandestine behaviors for unlicensed bands until something really bad goes down.

        Yupper vyt1az.

I have several friends who own transceivers yet do not have a license. When the SHTF, they will not have a clue what they are doing. I learned the book stuff to get my ticket. Once I got my ticket that is when my education really began.

Agree 100%. Like a drivers license and a pilots license, it’s a license to learn. Every drive you do is skill acquired.

For a pilot it’s 25 to 35 hours dual flight, then another 25 hours a student pilot ( no passengers/ it’s your neck). Practical Flight test follows if instructor/examiner signs off. But every ground action and flight is always learning

Just an observation from my 70+ yrs on the planet: the moment you think you know everything, Murphy arrives. Try to stay humble and learn. You will survive Murphy

And thanks to you Johnymac, I have my General ticket. I started prepping for Extra test while all the testing info is in my head. Yet, I feel I better stop & learn to use what I got first before being accomplished in all tests but too ignorant to select a band & frequency and match my critical antenna requirements for OPTIMUM performance

Learn all you can my fellow GIs and citizens. Our Republic needs us all… soon.

God Bless, 73, and Salute to all

This is awesome johnyMac. Readers, there is a pretty big learning curve with ham radio. If you REALLY want to accelerate then get a good background in the hobby and hands-on time as johnyMac has suggested. Then attend RTO Basic and take your knowledge into the ionosphere. Or do it in reverse, as many have done. All these ideas fit together.

Pretty sure the test is not online. Unfortunately. Wish it was, as I forwarded it to many places and talked it up, but some of the people who contacted about it got notice about it that the testing is done local?

“Testing will be offered on December 19th at 08:30 am at ETV headquarters, 1041 George Rogers Blvd in Columbia. We’ll take care of the administrative work and start the testing at when the admin work is done. Bring a photo ID, an original and copy of any Ham Radio license, your FRN and $10.00 cash. If a child is testing and has no photo I.D., bring a copy of a birth certificate.”
