REDEMPTION

Our English word redeem comes from the Latin and signifies to buy or purchase again. This word, or a form of it, is found several times through the Word of God. The doctrine of redemption by blood instructs us that Christ came to this earth to save His people (Matthew 1:21). By His sinless life He proved He was qualified to die a substitutionary death in order to save His people from our sins. By His sin-cleansing, redemptive work, He made peace with God by suffering in His body and soul the full extent of the wrath of God for His people. His sacrifice brought in everlasting righteousness and put away the sins of all those in whose stead He suffered, bled, died and arose. The redeemed ones are said to be bought unto God by the blood of Christ (Revelation 5:9), bought from the earth (Revelation 14:3), and bought from among men (Revelation 14:4). The saints were bought with the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 6:20). Paul declared to the Ephesian elders that the Son of God bought the church with His own blood (Acts 20:28). We are His purchased possession.

Sometimes when the word redeemed is used in the New Testament it signifies to buy or purchase out of the hands of another. This truth is taught in Galatians 3:13. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us.” The law and justice of God had a just claim on every sinner because of our sins and demanded that the price for violating the law be exacted from guilty sinners; the price was death! Jesus Christ, the Substitute of His people, died in the place, stead and room of those the Father entrusted to Him in covenant grace. He suffered the fierceness of the wrath and anger of God because of our sins. We read that He was “made under the law to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons” (Galatians 4:5).

This word also means to set a slave or captive free by paying the ransom price for him. The children of God are said to be redeemed, not with silver or gold – the customary means to ransom a slave in the days of old – but with “the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19). “The Son of Man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Thank God for full and free redemption through the blood of His own beloved Son. The price for our redemption has been paid by the Savior and we are His.
