Dean Phillips Admits ‘It’s Delusional’ To Think Biden Can Beat Trump
On Saturday, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) said in a post on X that the claims that President Joe Biden could defeat former President Donald Trump in a potential 2024 matchup were “delusional.”
Phillips shared a report by Politico in the post, and cited his declining poll numbers as the justification behind his claim. Trump leads Biden in polls by NBC News, Quinnipiac, Fox News and Morning Consult.
“As a member of House Democratic Leadership, I supported and promoted the Biden agenda,” Phillips posted. “I campaigned for him, voted for him, and respect him. But how can anyone read this and conclude he’s positioned to defeat Donald Trump? It’s delusional.”
Phillips is one of the few Democrats to announce a challenge to Biden. He made the announcement on Oct. 26, citing concerns about Biden’s age and ability to win the 2024 election. The only other challenger for the Democratic nomination is writer and self-help guru Marianne Williamson.
However, Biden has several other third-party challengers from liberal candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and professor Cornel West, who are running as independents, and 2016’s Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who is running for her party’s nomination again.
Phillips’ concerns revolve around Biden’s physical and mental health. On the physical side, Biden has suffered several public falls during his time in office, including one at the Air Force Academy on June 1, a fall on his bike in June 2022, and stumbles on the steps of Air Force One on two separate occasions. Biden now takes a different set of stairs onto Air Force One, among other concessions to his age.
Mentally, Biden has had a history of gaffes during speeches, including one instance in which he publicly attempted to call out to Rep. Jackie Walorski, who had died some weeks prior. The president has often been seen wandering around on stages after finishing his speeches.
