CENTCOM Launches Major Strikes in Syria After Assad Flees to Russia
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) conducted a series of airstrikes targeting ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria on Sunday in its mission to “disrupt, degrade and defeat ISIS,” Fox News reported.
This operation comes in response to the recent upheaval following the escape of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad to Russia, amidst the capture of the capital by a coalition of radical Islamist groups. CENTCOM’s strategic target was to disrupt and degrade ISIS, ensuring the terrorist organization does not exploit the power vacuum left by the Assad regime’s collapse.
The military engagement involved over 75 precise strikes utilizing aircraft such as B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s. Initial assessments have suggested a successful operation with no reported civilian casualties, which CENTCOM has emphasized is a priority in their military interventions.
General Michael Erik Kurilla, head of CENTCOM, articulated a firm stance on preventing any resurgence of ISIS during this unstable period.
“There should be no doubt – we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria,” General Kurilla said, per Fox News. “All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way.”
