President Petro Militarizes Colombia-Venezuela Border
Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered the militarization of Colombia’s northeastern border with Venezuela. He also asked the Maduro regime to mirror the move.
On Thursday, President Petro said he ordered the Colombian army to deploy 25,000 troops to the Catatumbo area in Norte de Santander; he also said that if Venezuela followed suit, it would “reduce to the maximum the forces of the mafia.”
The president called the move an offensive against armed groups and illegal economies, that he said, thrive on cross-border mobility. The President’s post on X said: “I have ordered the Colombian army to expand the number of troops in the Catatumbo. We have 25,000 soldiers in the zone,” adding “It is not the land that defeats the mafia; it is coordination between the two states that does it.”
