According to a local intelligence report, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) were trained in Ukraine in the use of military drones and urban guerrilla tactics. The Mexican newspaper Milenio revealed this Monday that CJNG members were trained in Ukraine to handle drones using advanced warfare techniques, which include the use of explosives. Sources from the Jalisco government confirmed that these criminals received military training under the guidance of guerrillas. In fact, the CJNG has a specialized unit dedicated to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, known as “Drone Operators,” which even has its own distinctive emblem within the organization. Recently, a video circulated on social media showing a CJNG operation in Michoacán, Mexico, where up to ten individuals in tactical camouflage clothing deploy drones loaded with explosives, while the rest of the members escort the operation following strict military protocols. In the footage, a DJI Matrice 300 RTK can be observed, a drone used in Ukraine to launch RPG rockets. “Cartels are becoming increasingly involved in international conflicts. The modernization of their tactics is alarming,” stated a security analyst, who emphasized the growing use of drones in criminal operations. Our outlet spoke with citizens in Michoacán, who expressed concern about the rise in violence and the sophistication of the methods used by criminal groups. “This is no longer just about bullets; now they use warfare technology,” commented a local resident. The news highlights how the CJNG has strengthened itself amid the internal war of the Sinaloa Cartel, adopting advanced military tactics to establish itself as one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal groups. What measures should the Mexican government take to stop the cartels’ use of drones?
