The U.S. Department of Justice has filed federal charges against a man accused of sending a threatening letter to conservative commentator Benny Johnson, officials announced on Friday.

The suspect, George Isabel, was taken into custody Tuesday for allegedly sending the letter to Johnson’s home around September 18, about a week after the fatal shooting of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

He faces up to 5 years in prison, according to DOJ.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the letter showed Johnson was targeted for his political views.

“The author of this letter made it very clear that he hated Benny because of his views and he wanted Benny dead,” Bondi told reporters.

Investigators were able to trace fingerprints on the envelope to Isabel and found that the letter’s origin was San Diego, California.

The letter contained violent content.

“After writing that he hoped that the American flag ‘strangles the life out of you,’ the letter stated: ‘Maybe someone will blow your head off!!!’”

The letter also said: “We can hope! Planning any public engagements? Love to see your head explode and your blood stain the concrete red. What a sight!”
