US Senate unanimously approves repeal of 2002 Iraq war resolution

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday approved repealing the 2002 authorization that launched the Iraq War.

The measure that passed with bipartisan support was proposed to reassert congressional authority over future military combat engagements.

Senators who backed the move argued it would help restore constitutional checks on executive power, particularly in light of current conflicts abroad, AP News reported.

Opponents warned the action could constrain the U.S. president’s ability to respond quickly to threats without formal approval from Congress first.

The repeal passed in a 65–33 bipartisan vote.
