‘Doesn’t Make Sense’: Biden DOJ Subpoenaed Jim Jordan’s Phone Records Going Back to January 2020

The Biden Department of Justice subpoenaed the personal phone records of House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in 2022, seeking his phone data going all the way back to January 1, 2020, according to newly released records obtained by Fox News.

A federal prosecutor who later worked on special counsel Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 investigation ordered Verizon to hand over the congressman’s phone data as part of the FBI’s Arctic Frost investigation.

The toll records did not include the contents of Jordan’s phone calls or messages but did include details about when calls and messages were sent and received and with whom Jordan was communicating. The subpoena sought records for three other phone numbers, which were redacted. It included a one-year gag order signed by a D.C. magistrate judge.

The Biden Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched the sprawling operation targeting Trump and his supporters in April 2022, initially prompted by January 6, and the Trump alternate elector effort.

“Why were they spying on Jim Jordan in January 2020?”  the GOP-led House Judiciary Committee wondered on X.  ” Arctic Frost was supposedly about January 6, 2021. That’s a whole year unexplained. DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.”

The Committee released 200 pages of documents last month, revealing that more than 150 Republicans, including current Trump administration officials, were targeted during the Arctic Frost probe

The operation also targeted 92 Republican-aligned organizations, including the Republican National Committee (RNC)Turning Point USA, co-founded by Charlie Kirk; the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI), headed by Ed Corrigan; and the America First Policy Institute, founded in 2021 by Brooke Rollins, Larry Kudlow, and Linda McMahon.

Additionally, the Biden FBI targeted the personal cell phones of at least ten Republican senators and one Republican representative as part of its Arctic Frost investigation, including Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.).

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s toll records were also sought in 2023.

“They spied on President Trump. They spied on Senators. Now, we just learned, they spied on me,” Jordan commented on X, Thursday night.

Arctic Frost was officially opened at the FBI’s Washington Field Office on April 13, 2022, and was initiated by FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Timothy Thibault, an anti-Trumper who was forced to retire from the Bureau after Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) exposed his extreme anti-Trump bias.

The investigation later formed the basis for Jack Smith’s special counsel inquiry into Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election and the January 6 Capitol protest.

The special counsel investigation was initiated by Attorney General Merrick Garland on November 18, 2022, following Donald Trump’s announcement of his 2024 presidential campaign.

Smith has defended his investigation, saying it was consistent with DOJ policies and that his subpoenas were “entirely proper” and narrowly tailored.

According to Fox, Verizon produced Jordan’s phone records for the DOJ in response to their subpoena.

Verizon said in a statement Thursday that it has been working with the House and Senate Judiciary committees and “working tirelessly” to gather information on the subpoenas related to lawmakers.

“As part of our investigation, we uncovered new information regarding Chairman Jordan and shared it with him as soon as possible,” Verizon spokesman Rich Young said. “We are committed to restoring trust through transparency and will continue to work with Congress and the administration as they examine these issues and consider reforms to expand notification protections.”

Jordan is now asking major banks to hand over communications and materials related to Smith’s investigations into Trump, Politico reported Friday.

Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley are among more than a dozen financial institutions receiving letters from the Ohio Republican, who wants documents relating to requests for financial data from federal law enforcement officials.

“During the Biden-Harris Administration, the Department of Justice subpoenaed financial institutions … for financial records of private customer data in its politicized investigations into President Trump,” Jordan wrote in the letters obtained by Politico. “We write to request relevant materials in [your] possession.”

The House Judiciary Committee last month accused the Biden Justice Department of using the Arctic Frost investigation to “take down President Trump and his supporters.”

President Trump on October 29 called for “deranged Jack Smith” and the other Democrat operatives involved in Operation Arctic Frost to be investigated and imprisoned.

“These thugs should all be investigated and put in prison. A disgrace to humanity. Deranged Jack Smith is a criminal!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
