LOS CASTRO AND THE NARCOTRAFFICKING: THE TRUTH THAT THE REGIME HAS TRIED TO HIDE FOR DECADES
For years, the Cuban dictatorship has presented itself as an austere regime, an enemy of capitalism and organized crime. However, behind that official narrative, the facts reveal a different reality. Cuba was the first narco-state in Latin America, with Fidel and RaΓΊl Castro playing a central role in drug trafficking.
PABLO ESCOBAR AND RAΓL CASTRO: PARTNERS IN CRIME
Testimonies from former drug traffickers like Popeye and Carlos Lehder indicate that, during the 1980s, the MedellΓn Cartel used Cuba as a platform for shipping cocaine to the United States. Β According to Popeye, Pablo Escobar had special trust in RaΓΊl Castro, whom he described as βa serious and enterprising man.β Each flight bound for the Island could transport between 10 and 12 tons of cocaine, multiplying the cartel’s profits.
THE CASTROS’ PACT WITH THE NARCO TRAFFICKERS
Carlos Lehder recounted that he negotiated directly with RaΓΊl Castro, who authorized the use of Cayo Largo as an operational base. In exchange, the regime received millions of dollars in cash, while the Cuban Armed Forces guaranteed the safe transfer of the drugs to the U.S.
THE 1989 SCANDAL: FIDEL CASTRO SACRIFICES HIS MEN TO SAVE HIMSELF
In 1989, the DEA had sufficient evidence of the Cuban regime’s involvement in drug trafficking. To avoid being implicated, Fidel Castro ordered the execution of four high-ranking military officials: General Arnoldo Ochoa, Colonel Antonio de la Guardia, Captain Jorge MartΓnez ValdΓ©s , Major Amado PadrΓ³n Trujillo.
The dictatorship portrayed them as βtraitors,β using them as scapegoats to protect the image of Fidel and RaΓΊl.
JUAN REINALDO SΓNCHEZ: βFIDEL CASTRO WAS FOR YEARS THE LEADER OF NARCOTRAFFICKING IN CUBAβ
Fidel’s former bodyguard revealed in his book The Hidden Life of Fidel Castro that the dictator directly controlled the drug trafficking business on the Island. SΓ‘nchez claimed to have heard Fidel Castro and the then Minister of the Interior, JosΓ© Abrantes, authorize drug trafficking operations in exchange for multimillion-dollar payments. βThe god he protected turned out to be a drug trafficker,β he confessed.
THE CASTROS’ NARCOTRAFFICKING DIDN’T END IN THE 80S
After the 1989 scandal, the business shifted to Venezuela and Nicaragua, where Chavismo and Sandinismo took on the role of new intermediaries. The former head of Venezuelan Military Intelligence, Hugo βEl Polloβ Carvajal, denounced in a letter circulated by the press that the shipment of cocaine to the United States was a state policy promoted alongside the Cuban regime from the era of Hugo ChΓ‘vez. The DEA has confirmed that the Cuban regime continues to be linked to drug trafficking networks in Latin America.
THE HISTORY OF THE CASTROS IS NOT THAT OF A REVOLUTION, BUT THAT OF A MAFIA
Castrism used the Cuban state to enrich itself through organized crime.
