Apowerful winter storm moving through the United States has created major travel disruptions, forcing airlines to cancel thousands of flights on Sunday.

The storm is bringing heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain from the southern Rocky Mountains to New England, according to weather forecasts.

The storm is expected to blanket the Northeast, including major cities like Washington, New York and Boston, with 1 to 2 feet of snow.

With hazardous conditions spreading, airlines have canceled nearly 14,000 flights since Saturday, the Associated Press reported.

About 9,600 of those flights were canceled on Sunday and more are expected, making it potentially the worst single day of cancellations since the pandemic, according to the AP.

So far, the storm has resulted in power outages impacting about 500,000 people in states such as Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
