There’s a certain type of Republican politician who has this weird image of the Founding Fathers as wholesome gentlemen who were devout Christians (all true) but were also weak, feckless cowards (and this is a good thing according to the Pence types) who never would dare be uncivil towards one another (unless it’s cool like when John Adams insulted the South Carolina delegation in Philadelphia, which is totally good actually because they were racist).
It’s one of the most bland, uninspiring historical myths, uttered by the most unimpressive people you’ve ever met, it’s completely at odds with reality, and it only exists to give cowards like Mike Pence the mental cover to continue to be cowards and sacrifice all morals and principle to keep chasing money (which is what most of the “establishment” “boomer” types in the GOP care about the most).
Once you spot this particular tic, it’s impossible not to see it. These people are usually boomers, silent generation (the two or three that are still alive) or older Gen X. They go around constantly aping this strange, schizophrenic, ahistorical version of the Founding Fathers as anything from a way to show off their supposed historical and philosophical acumen, excuse their own cowardice and lack of achievement, or to score points in some personal beef with another Republican who has accomplished more (usually the younger types in the party). In doing so, these feckless losers wear the honored memory of men whose shoes they are not fit to shine like a pathetic skinsuit. You don’t hate these people enough, the damage they have done to you is honestly beyond my patience and willpower to describe, and its good they’re dying out.
Good fucking riddance.
