Iran, Pakistan back in talks amid Houthi victories

Iran and Pakistan are now discussing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, as the Houthis dramatically expand their control of Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi and Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Munir reportedly discussed de-escalation, renewed diplomacy, and the Houthi attacks on Saudi territory today.

The stakes for Pakistan are particularly high, because it’s party to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi and Turkey, under which an attack against one member is treated as an attack against all.

The news comes as the Houthis sweep through the remaining government-held stretch of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, toward the strategically vital Bab el-Mandeb.

The discussion is about preventing an escalation that could increasingly pit the Mecca Pact against Iran, despite the hotly debated possibility of Iran itself eventually joining the emerging alliance.
