Painting guns is a great idea! Put on all your cool guy camo gear and hold that black rifle and look in a mirror…. stands out like a sore thumb….. Thanks for sharing….

I don’t paint my guns, because of my location, I choose OD green furniture or Duracoat for the 2/tone look.. But I will also use a snipers weapon veil, and that stretchy self adhesive camo tape stuff.. Add local veggies and voila, camoed.. That stretchy camo tape stuff is usefull and mostly reusable.. Also makes a great tourniquet, or for binding wounds, splints etc, because of it’s elasticity, like an Ace bandage.. Always keep a couple rolls on my LBE.. Cheap 10 packs on amazon too..

The camotape wrap doesn’t last. It gets dirty and greasy looking after a few weeks. It also fades to a light color. You should paint your guns.

I don’t leave it on there.. That’s the point, to be able to remove and reapply it.. When ya paint your rifle, it gets all scratched up, worn off, and looks like shit!

Opening day, Blacktail season.. Hope there aren’t too many kooks in the woods! I opened the Forest Service gate at 4AM, (I have keys) saw a few vehicles pass thru.. Just about to leave for deer camp.. Some of my buddies are already set up.. Wonder if I’ll score on opening day, like last year.. Bottle of Crown Royal goes to the first kill!

I used one of these two years ago on my lightweight “field carbine”. I did it a little different than Hawkeye- I would pick a splotch on the stencil, place the stencil down, paint just that splotch, then relocate the stencil to a new location and rotate it to create a randomized pattern. I had a few spots where the paint bled under the stencil and disrupted the pattern, but overall was very happy with my poor-man’s multicam krylon paint job.

Hawkeye: Thank you for making this video; realistic, down to earth and simple – and exactly how I approach it. Hopefully this will encourage other people to not be afraid that they might ‘mess up’ their safe queens. I used to be hesitant about spray painting my guns, but earlier this summer I clicked into ‘practical battle mode’ and finally realized it is ridiculously to not seize every advantage on the upcoming battlefield. Guns are tools, and as long as the paint doesn’t impede function, every battle gun should be painted ASAP. Let me repeat this for emphasis:

EVERY BATTLE RIFLE AND HANDGUN SHOULD BE PAINTED ASAP. THIS SHOULD BE YOUR #1 PROJECT RIGHT NOW.

Every single gun in my safe got the exact same treatment, because every single gun has one purpose: battefield self-defense.

Perfection is the enemy of done, so don’t let the thought of needing a fancy camo pattern keep you from getting started! I picked up some Kryptek stencils because that is my standard cammo pattern, but let’s be honest – ain’t nobody going to be able to see or be able to tell your pattern from 25 yds. away. Like Hawkeye said, the goal is to make it NOT look like a gun. This is to stack the survivability odds in YOUR FAVOR.

“But my pattern might not match all the different terrain in my AO, I just can’t decide…” Seriously – do you really think your black rifle or even hodgepodge tan / olive MOE furniture is any better? Stop overthinking this and GET IT DONE!

I need to paint my R700. I put that off because of the $$$ I put into the rifle. But it’s not a toy, or a queen. It’s a weapon, and should look the part.

Just finished my AR pistol. I used the digital stencil. The jury is still out whether I really like it or not. The stencil began to curl after being hit with the camo paint and I sorta had to wing it from there. Normally I do an ASAT pattern if any of you remember that one. Thought I would give this Primary Arms stencil a go. Maybe it will grow on me. But its still a lot better than black! Wish I could post a photo, but I don’t see any way of doing that.

ASAT is such a cool pattern!

My 2 cents worth….”Plant eater” animals hide or they don’t have babies. “Meat eating” animals have to hide until they kill… or they starve, and don’t have babies. Nature doesn’t play favorites.
I didn’t want to put krylon on my precious (I’ve been thinking ’bout it for a couple years. I made a cardboard cutout of my rifle, and played with magic markers, because I don’t like mistakes). And yes, I used an artists brush, and paint straight out of the spray can.
Background colors – buttstock and some of the lower I used green. For the barrel and handguard and the front of the receiver I went with gray. See my note below about tigers, or for that matter look up okapis. Remember the counter shading,(the belly is a lighter color).
From what I’ve seen and heard leopards are not just hunters, they are magical, (for us today – think green/brown background with leopard/black + light brown spots)….for the buttstock. For the handguard and barrel go look up Okapi, (think tiger stripe uniforms). Add in some light gray counter shading, (a whitetail deer is brown, the belly of a whitetail deer is white). ,
Oh, and by the way, look at a photo of an ‘real honest to God’ tiger. The front ain’t all “stripey”. Its the back end. The front and back end “DON’T MATCH” . I call that a clue. A long time ago I was taught that at distance the camouflage will tend to “blob” out. It all looks like one color, (Clue.. think one shape=bad). Don’t forget the bottom half of your 1st mag. I brought it out feeding the chickens, laid in the tall grass, and couldn’t find my rifle in 10 minutes. Seasons greeting to all. -just call me “worm”
