Okay, I finally broke down and ordered rifle plates.
The price is for sure definitely right.
The reason I have not, is complicated.
When I was a frogman, my mentors were Vietnam SEALs.
Lighter and slicker was almost always better.
    Helmets? Armor? No way.
Sliding through drainage ditches and tiger grass was part of the frogman advantage.
    Moving ahead several decades….
My feeling is that, post SHTF, any rifle wound, to your gut, shoulder, leg etc, is going to be fatal.
For freedomistas, there will be no battalion aid stations, no medevacs, no fleet hospitals.
Any but the most glancing of wounds is likely to be fatal.
For Uncle Sam’s soldiers, the deal is different. You will attack that target when ordered,
But, if wounded, you will get top-notch trauma care from medics to surgeons.
Not so for the freedom fighter. Any serious wound will be fatal. No hospitals for you.
Therefore, rifle plates, to the extent they make you feel invincible, like a RoboCop,
they are more likely to cause you to engage in stand-up face-to-face battle…
and catch that probably fatal wound. No hospitals for freedom fighters.
So what finally changed my thinking?
For one, price and availability. Thanks, Scout.
The other reason? Well, I still think any serious wound will be fatal. (No hospitals for us.)
But what if, despite every effort to stay light, slippery and unseen, you are forced into a stand-up gun fight?
In that case, if you are able to get on your plate carrier, they might prevent the fight-stopping shot.
This might give you the extra five or ten minutes to make a difference to your battle buddies,
and to those you are trying to protect.
Even if you are still likely to get tagged with an eventually fatal wound outside the plate.
There will be no medics, surgeons, or hospitals for freedom fighters.
    So it’s a balance, I suppose.
Given my choice, I’ll always prefer to go light, slick, and unseen.
You mileage will almost certainly differ. These are just my own thoughts.

      Amen brother.

I always with very limited knowledge thought the plates were a add in/add out to a level 3 vest that onc could wear concealed to a degree without plates and feel the situation needs plates could add.

I get it,not always wearing plates might be the moment you get the shot that plates could have helped, also feel you want some degree of protection but want to blend in perhaps just a vest.

        Yup. You’re exactly right.

You can rock a PC w a few mags to stay lightweight or be like the modern British Paras in Afghanistan and wear the PC over your suspenders of your belt kit.

I’d rather carry as many mags as possible even w plates. So I have to shed weight elsewhere. Ammo and water are top priority for me in the end.

Glad my tip helped influence Bracken to order some plates! I work with a lot of NSW and SOF guys and know a few that a plate has saved their asses.

sometimes that plate is catching fragmentation as well. MB you may still consider a helmet and moreover set of plates for the MRS, kids grandkids etc.. while you maybe doing the ass kicking they may need some plates while on the move or hunkered down.

Guy get friendly with your nurses and dr neighbors they will be your possible medics, take a ER nurse to the range and get a trauma course ad hoc in trade.

as far as wounding for sure sometimes plates dont cover the area hit, like we had a dude take around to the pelvis right under the plate and he got top notch care asap so that’s a definete dice roll on every engagement

LAPG also gets lvl IV plates in from time to time. Keep track of MrGunsNGear’s social media for updates. They are fairly cheap and reliable according to test vids online.

I’m looking into the Shot Stop special threat plates. Fairly expensive but the durability that ceramic plates lack has won me over.

I picked these up in late summer after a pal strongly endorsed them. FRONT multi-curve plates are slightly more comfortable, but cost 3x-4x. A quality PC is more important for comfort than multi-curve, and will hold up considerably better than a cheap one. I went with Gadsden Dynamics’ PC, because every bit of gear I have from them is excellent. It’s extremely comfortable and I’ve done a fair bit of road work in the PC, slick, to get it adjusted just right.
