Blast Box: You probably want to make one

If you like to check your zero on an AR or AK, zero that hunting rifle, or build and test guns. The Blast box, especially a tire (Video Below) or DWC (Pictured Above) design, is ever lasting. Unlike the wooden ones that fall apart and are prohibitively expensive these days. The tire or DWC is superior in every respect to the lumber.
Any cheap old tires will work. And you can shoot your guns guilt free any day, all day. You don’t need to use old motorcycle tires. A used economy tire costs about $8 if you are short on spare tires. And you will need about 8 of them. Make sure you get the same size. A few pieces of old lumber or timbers work well on both sides of the tires to hold it in place. The setup below is a little complicated… I would just build mine on the ground.
You don’t need to seal up both sides like this video demonstrates. Simply having something there makes your rifle significantly quieter. Your neighbors will thank you. Imagine being the guerrilla unit in the woodline who randomly fires loud bullets to confirm zero. Or, you can make something that completely changes the audible dynamics of the gunshot.
Where my friends live in Maryland it is legal to shoot, but I feel bad for the neighbors some days when  we are firing several hundred rounds of 5.56.

Observe how effective these are. Nearly any design works A LOT better than nothing.

The IRA did this for covert training. Good information. Thanks.
In Europe it’s considered bad manners not to use cans.

The Europeans have some REALLY nice hardware. UK not so much… The Swiss have a Sig Sauer rifle we never got. Shoots 6.5×55 in a AR/AK style platform. For some reason they never bothered to import it or manufacture it here. The Jihadi’s in Europe haven’t seen a fight yet…

Biden says we need F 15s and nukes to take on the government . I want an F 15. Biden also said the government was almost overthrown by a few hundred rowdies on Jan 06. Lol.

useful tip. Might be a little awkward on a patrol carry rifle :-P

    Excellent.

Great idea. I wondered how an ODA would get a unit of G’s trained on weapons without the entire Oblast knowing about every round fired. Many communities have old tires laying all over – I know mine sure does – waiting to be picked up for free.

I believe they usually use a bull dozer to make a large and wide trench. In Palestine they build under ground tunnels to shoot and sight their weapons in.

To get free used tires check with your local tire shop. Where I live in Missouri my tire guy will give them to me for free because it costs them to get rid of them.

But with some planning one could be set up at a pre-determined location for a special occasion.

From several years ago, didn’t the DC sniper and accomplice use something akin to this by utilizing the rear of a car and trunk area, with hole cut out in the rear, to reduce their audible and visual footprint?

    • Johnny Paratrooper June 24, 2021 at 22:00

Correct. And they lined the truck with blankets. True facts; You can shoot from inside a house with a slightly opened window and the neighbors can hardly hear it…

There are a multitude of uses for old tires.. in fact thousands of B-17 tires were used to fill up the cavities within the walls of the Pentagon.

I was thinking about building something like this when I got some land but was wracking my brain on what to build it out of for sound proofing.
Somehow never thought of tires. This is perfect! I can get as many as I want for free due to the charges for disposal that companies have to pay.

    • Johnny Paratrooper June 26, 2021 at 00:25

NICE! Build two and you can double your lanes, halve the time, and possibly move one if you need too.

Would having the muzzle just inside the first tire help with sound suppression?

    • Johnny Paratrooper July 1, 2021 at 20:24

Yes. But it is significantly more effective the deeper you go (Zing)
