There is no knowledge or wisdom greater than that of God… which was manifested to us through Jesus.
9For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. (Clossians 1:9-15)
Paul is praying that the Colossians will be filled with wisdom and spiritual understanding… Paul wants them to continue to grow.  The more wisdom and understanding that we have, the better perspective that we have.
Having correct and accurate knowledge and understanding is a vital element in living a Christian life.  Learning how to apply the knowledge and understanding in how we live our life requires discipleship and encouragement.
More wisdom and spiritual understanding help us to see with Christs’ perspective.  Knowledge of Jesus’ will helps us to:

  • See our wife as Jesus sees her… as His daughter, His bride.
  • See the brother that gets on your nerves… as His son.
  • See your heathen co-worker… as someone that Christ shed His blood for.
  • See the homeless person… as Christ sees them.
  • See who we are… to see God’s will for our life.

Proper wisdom and understanding allow us to walk worthy of the Lord (verse 10).

  • Fruitful in every good work – responding in the spirit instead of reacting in the flesh.
  • Strengthened according to His power – leaning on His strength instead of ours (think of David & Goliath, recall Paul beaten and stoned)
  • Giving thanks (thankful) to the Father – our lives should be filled with thankfulness for what we have (not complainers). We should be the most thankful people on the planet… God has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. We are no longer going to Hell.  Have we forgotten so quickly that we were on the road to hell.

Be thankful because…(verse 13) He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
Be thankful because… (verse 14) in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Paul’s first description of Jesus in his letter to the Colossians is found in verse 15… He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  Firstborn –meaning priority in time or supremacy in rank.  Jesus was before all things.  Jesus was of a supremely different order than all things that were created.
For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
I pray that you would be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
God Bless,
