JP missed the chance to buy new tires: A 2021 problem.

Looks like I may have missed the chance to get tires!

If you need anything for any reason.

I suggest you buy it now.

We were warned months ago and I should have listened.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a36312124/tire-shortage-possible/

I may have missed the chance to get tires until things settle down.

A lot of authors wrote about this for other car sites.

They had tires in stock not too long ago…

I missed it by a month!

Good thing I put new tires on my bike and my daily driver this year.

I am good for the next 4 years if there is a major disaster.

But I do need some rubber for my other toy.

I had tires in my checkout cart but decided to look for a favored brand a month ago.

Snow tires are in short supply as well.

This is one of the most critical preparedness items that most people don’t consider. IIRC there was a good article a year or two back by NCScout about tire selection, repair, etc.

I bought truck tires recently and noticed that the normal “D” load rating options were in short supply but there were tons of “E” rated options. Another way to find tires for trucks is to see if you can fit a less standard size like a 1″ taller tire _and_ in a higher E rating. I found tons of those and fortunately they fit my truck without rubbing.

Measure carefully. These two links are very helpful
    https://tiresize.com/comparison/
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

Higher ply “E” rated tires are obviously going to be heavier and pricier but they’re more likely to last a lot longer and take more abuse. Especially if you’re planning on doing any overlanding or carrying heavy loads.

Another option is buying a few extra used tires as replacements from reputable shops. That and a spare set of used mudding tires which can be found locally if you’re in a more rural area. Not the most fun thing to drive on the road, but it’s better than not having tires.

There is a lot to be said for a full size spare as well.

        I wish I had 4 honestly!

    Great reminder and good tips!

I should have listened…I think that is going to haunt a lot of people.

…I should have listened and got more food.
…I should have listened and bought more tools.
…I should have listened and took care of my health.
…I should have listened and built my local network.

The list could go on and on, but the biggest one is,

…I should have listened and got more training!

Just curious who this is in the photo? I love the work gloves and bare feet combination.

Tire rack.com still has most sizes and free shipping. They even have run -flat tires.

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 25, 2021 at 18:20

Truth. They are fast and work hard.
I have used them for daily driver tires and motorcycle tires.

We just got a windfall a month ago from a scholarship the wife applied for, and as soon as the money hit the account we bought brand new Goodyears for her daily driver. Wife wanted to wait for December-Jan timeframe and said no way.

      A good move.
Performance tires are hard to find.
And there has been a explosion in affordable performance cars.
China is buying all the rubber too.

Back in the day, before Al Gore invented the internet, I was a brand spanking new 2nd Lt with orders to Okinawa. One thing the wife and I learned living there, if you see something you need, buy it..because the next time you come to the PX, it will be gone. We are back in that mode…see it, need it, score it or it will be gone.

The stereo equipment. From reel to reels to turntables, receivers etc :-)
Still have an old Yashica metal cased 35mm from there.
      Was in Camp Hansen

Back to tires – Any of you remember years back when recap tires where sold?

With pending cold temps, have your battery tested if not replaced depending on your vehicle. I suspect battery supply will be “Bidenized” as well.

Had one new battery recently that would only hold 580 of the 700rated capacity. Took it back the following day. Second one was warranty replacement and delayed days as not being in stock. These were Optima Red tops.

Sucks being in a Democrat Regime…

    Might try checking out
    tires-easy.com
I’ve been using them for several years now. From lawn mower to tractor tires, car & pickup,
Typically free shipping. When in stock around 3 days for delivery. FWIW. just ordered a set for pick up today,

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 26, 2021 at 15:21

      Nice.
I ordered tires. It’s a 90 day wait for high performance Sport Touring tires now.

And this is why you never buy cheap tires. You never know how long they’ll have to last. Currently kicking myself right now.

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 26, 2021 at 15:20

Cheap tires are a waste of money unless you are driving a low horsepower economy car.
But even then, you never know if you get 3 years or 5 years out of them.
A tire doesn’t last much past 5 years. New or used, the Ozone eats the rubber.

  11. Cavguy October 26, 2021 at 00:24

Just got 12 new tires. 6 on my RV toyhauler and 6 on my 3500 dualie. Bridgestone Burris truck tire not cheap. The Bridgestone were a special order. That took a while to get to east bum f Idaho. Now I’m in sunny southern AZ looking at the boarder.

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 26, 2021 at 15:18

Nice. You should be good for the next 4-5 years.
I bet that was a little pricey!

  12. No Thanks October 26, 2021 at 02:23

This article has me thinking how the folks in say Venezuela have felt the past several years. Guys I think the writing is painfully visible on the wall so to speak. . .

  13. Encouraging Angels October 26, 2021 at 09:18

JP-this is a great article-my 2 cents is that if we consider what come next in a logical progression is that human beings will turn to stealing those same tires in very short order and no matter the insurance you have you wouldn’t be able to replace them. So I think that the AP faithful should get consider purchasing locking tire lugs while they can still be found. $20 of locking tire lugs just might save $800 worth of tires.

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 26, 2021 at 15:17

      Very smart.
This is a very smart idea.
Basically every single high performance sports car and truck is driving around with $1,000-2,000 in balanced, mounted, and pricey hard to source tires.

  14. Trapper October 26, 2021 at 10:48

    Try tires-easy.com
Free shipping, usually good selection on sizes n types Have used for several years, from lawn mower to tractor, cars n pickups Just bought 6 this week for pickup E load rate Kumho @ $135 ea

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 26, 2021 at 15:22

      Nice.
I will keep them in mind.

  15. Weezy October 26, 2021 at 16:50

At the risk of being flamed by the group, by chance tried Walmart for the heck of it? For example I’m getting close to needing a new set myself for my F150, and the local store has Goodyear AT/S’s for $122. Whereas a good tire shop in town, which I trust, is offering Yokohama geolanders for $190 😬

    • Johnny Paratrooper October 27, 2021 at 08:21

I would get the Yokohama Geolanders.
And no, I don’t give my money to China Mart.

      • Weezy October 27, 2021 at 12:49

        Fair enough.

  16. James October 26, 2021 at 18:24

Johnny,in a pinch hit the bone yards for a dece t used set, have done that many times with decent results.

As for the locking lugs, sure, but realize hammering a correct sized socket with then allow folks to remove easy.

Best of luck in your tire hunt!

I recently picked up a 1981 G -20 Pathfinder van 4×4,still needs a few odds and ends but mostly rebuilt to the hills, could use better tires and wheels when done in spring, sigh………
