Regarding your emphasizing learning navigation hard skills.
As a helmsman, I’ve been on the Bridge with newly minted officers straight out of the Academy who could only find their way via GPS.
Us older guys keep telling the younger ones that the Black Box is going away some day and you better learn to find your way at sea the old fashion way; a watch, SOG and compass. Wouldn’t hurt to master the Sextant. We’d spend hours in the chart room trying to teach those guys.
    Didn’t stick.

that is crazy, star and nautical navigation for Mariners must be a requisite for assignment on a Bridge of a ship!

You’d think. I didn’t go to an academy. OJT.
They should have had text book training, but, from my experience, it didn’t stick with some guys. People get lazy. They use the black box and never practice hard skills.

NC Scout, what was the furthest march you have had to do with your day job?

    • NC Scout December 28, 2021 at 17:49

The furthest? 22 miles. It sucked, but it wasn’t the hardest movement. That was in Afghanistan. Roughly 10 miles on an insertion at 6.5-8k feet. That was was far and away the hardest movement.

    Scout,
A few years ago I had the opportunity to instruct land navigation for REI. Nearly every student claimed more interest in knowing gps use or were already a user. Most realized that map and compass use was a weak point in fully understanding the background of gps. Interestingly, even though REI sells a lot of gps units, they present manual land navigation as a primary skill set they want to teach. GPS use is way down the list. So the class discussions always went down the path of explaining why that is. War, anti satellite conflict and maintenance problems, emp, product fragility and battery issues were all subjects addressed. Most students never considered any of these.
