Dr. Phillip Karber on Russia, Ukraine, and Their Ways of War (2015-2018) Must Watch!

Speaking to West Point cadets and faculty, Dr. Phillip Karber describes what he has learned about the Russian way of war from thirty trips he has made to Ukraine, including six months on the front lines of the war in the country’s east.

Dr. Phillip Karber, president of the Potomac Foundation, speaks at West Point about Russian operations in Ukraine, highlighting observations based on many trips to the war’s front lines. He discusses new Russian tactics and the trends that define the operating environment.

The CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program is pleased to invite you to a discussion with Dr. Phillip Karber, President of the Potomac Foundation, a defense and foreign policy think-tank. Dr. Karber, who is also a former DOD official and veteran defense analyst, will discuss Russia’s “hybrid warfare” campaign in eastern Ukraine. Dr. Karber has traveled repeatedly to eastern Ukraine during the present conflict, and has spoken first-hand with a number of the participants. Dr. Karber will draw on these discussions to elaborate on the techniques of Russian hybrid warfare, evaluate their effectiveness, and explore their implications for both Ukraine and the West.

Good presentation. Dr. Karber’s 1st vid: for openers:

…thermobaric bombs dropped by drones in 100 mi range…hot time in the supply depots tonight

…separate compartment on each fighting vehicle for a quad-copter, used 24/7 by the crew

…electronic warfare completely blinding a 20 mile area…breaking all command and GPS links . even frying electronic fuses on incoming arty and mortar shells…

    this guy is GOOD!

Is what Dr. Karber said about the Army’s EW still correct in 2022? Great content BTW. You guys are just knocking it out of the park with content. The new website design has me coming back regularly and made AP part of my daily news routine.

Whose Army? And what type of EW?

Interesting stuff? The lethality of latest innovations in technology and its employ shoot waaaaaay past interesting. Especially while the halls of our Pentagon ring with the correct usage of gender pronouns and somewhere in the bowels is an office working on flight suits for pregnant combat fliers..
Our oceans may not be wide enough.
Might yet get to test guerilla warfare against an enemy on our home soil without benefit of foreign resupply or “neutral” territory for escape/recovery.
Oh. And isn’t it special that any American civilian must ID and license themselves to fly a drone of any size/capability?.

      Yes.

Russia and USA could be building interplanetary freighters together but here we all are rooting around in the inbred castle dwellers/bankers’ gutter.

      You aren’t wrong.
But, technically, the ISS is a testament to the facts of life.
      We can have both…

I hear you. I am Irish therefore a romantic. Don’t worry, I have my eye on the ball though.

I wonder what was going through the minds of the cadets when Dr. Karber showed them what they would be up against knowing that their assests were lacking and they would be held to “honorable” rules of engagement? This is great behind the scenes (in reality every American should have to see this) information. Thank you!

Watched only the first video for now. The most sobering thing I saw was that the NATO command refused to allow return fire into Russia. Essentially, our allies will be slaughtered because we won’t attack batteries in Russia. Yet another completely defensive posture that results in defeat. Fortunately, the Ukraine gen’l went on offense even though it was out of necessity. Many lessons in this lecture…

Thank you so much for posting these! They are fantastic and eye-opening. Sadly, everything Bill Lind was warning about 15 years ago is coming to pass today with respect to 4th Generation Warfare tactics and the US military not adopting them.
