Syria Officially Joins China’s Belt and Road, Seeking Lifeline to Defy U.S. Sanctions
Why did we put them under sanctions knowing it would force them into the arms of China? – J.P.
Syria has officially joined China’s intercontinental Belt and Road Initiative, defying strict U.S. sanctions in hopes of securing a lifeline for lucrative investment in a country still ravaged by more than a decade of civil war.
Damascus’ participation was initiated during a ceremony Tuesday through the signing of a memorandum of understanding by Syrian Planning and International Cooperation Authority Chair Fadi al-Khalil and Chinese ambassador to Syria, Feng Biao.

Because we THOUGHT we could break them and install a more friendly regime. We were wrong. That simple.
Not Correct.
I will allow more guesses by yourself and others before I reveal the correct answer.
China is pushing into the oil reserves of the mid east. They have a 50 year plan. We do our best to plan beyond next Tuesday.
Actually, this could be interpreted as a face saving surrender.
Syria is wrecked after years of fighting. its economy is destroyed. Its infrastructure is destroyed, and large parts of the country ere still under the direct or indirect control of foreign powers with no end in sight. Even within most of the territory it does still control, it has to play a constant game of whack-a-mole with foreign state sponsored terrorist.
Now the new trade and pipeline route agreements will go through,, and instead of having a powerful bargaining position due to their location, the Syrians will end up getting whatever crumbs are left over by outside powers who will completely dictate the terms.
I suspect it isn’t a coincidence that this agreement happened only several weeks after repeated Israeli attacks on the port at Latakia. This was a direct strike on the heart of Alawite control, and one in which the Russians didn’t even lift a finger to stop.
