Those cheap tree pack dry bags you can get the at Walmart, yellow, red and blue (Don’t really like promoting that place, but the bags are a couple dollars) work great for keeping books dry in your pack. They’re really light weight and you can read the cover of the book without opening the bag. The red and blue fit a lot of the field guide manuals, and can fit a couple in each bag. Larger yellow one isn’t quite large enough for the Civil Defense Manuals to fit in, but works quite well for a float in the water (or carrying water). I used one of the yellow ones as a float last year on the lake. At 210lbs, it easily held me floating for a few hours while I was out there as well as tying my shoes to it (Zebra Mussels are like razor blades). I wanted to see if it would fail or leak, and it did not. I keep a 5L Seal Line OD green dry bag for the water gathering. I don’t have rain pants and wouldn’t cut them up to carry the water anyway. Could just tie off the pant legs at the bottom and still carry water the same, then you’re not out any gear. The water vines were a nice touch that I didn’t really know/think about. I have them everywhere, but I’m also in a location where you literally can’t go in any direction without hitting a stream, river, pond or lake.
