Hill People Gear Runners Kit Bag Hunting Set Up

The Hill People Gear Runners Kit Bag should warrant no introduction. It is an already well-proven piece of equipment that allows the carry of a full-size pistol when you don’t want it on your hip. Originally meant for use with rucks or for people wanting to carry while running, it shines just as well when hunting.

I have had my Runners Kit Bag for going on 6 years and it mostly saw use when I went on runs. But once I started hunting it got moved to support that role. I’ve used it when bow and rifle hunting. And have used it in stands and when walking around on the ground. It’s still an evolving system and this is how I have it set up currently.

I have PALS webbing on the front if I decide to add extra pouches on the front, but for now, I like keeping the front clean so it doesn’t get too bulky.

A simple 7x range finder that can also be used passively as a monocular is kept on my right hand side while wearing it.

On the left, I keep a set of 10x binoculars for various observations so I don’t need to needlessly point my rifle at things I want to look at.

And of course, on the bottom with the use of a Blue Force Gear Tourniquet hammock is a Gen 7 NAR CAT.

Inside the outermost compartment, I keep a variety of equipment. Starting on the left side of the photo I keep a headlamp, often times I am walking out to stands or blinds in the early morning before the sun is up, this allows me to be able to see where I am walking without having to hold a flashlight in my hand. Next, there is a set of NAR Trauma Shears and a Gerber Multitool. The shears are for cutting away clothing and equipment if I am treating someone I am hunting with. The multitool is pretty self-explanatory. Next, there is a small trauma kit on the off chance I get separated from my backpack that has a full ifak inside of it. Then there is a sharpie, and finally a Glock 17 mag. All of my spare mags are at least 17 rounders to guarantee use with any double stack 9mm Glock.

On the front of that pocket, I keep a Rite in the Rain and a mil-dot master. This is meant to be a system I can take across the US for hunting in different areas. In some locations out west, I may have to take a shot beyond what I normally do out in NC.

Finally we have the pocket that I keep my G19 with a surefire x300 in. For out in NC I most concerned about coyotes and mountain lions. 9mm on my person is a bunch better than the 308 resting against the tree while I process the deer. For use out west, I will most likely upgrade to a 10mm Glock. The light is once again, for when I am either walking to or leaving the stand. It also allows one-handed use.

I have been super happy with this setup and how it does not interfere with a harness when I am stand hunting. This is by no means all that I will take out when I go hunting, and I will be doing a post about the backpack I use when I go out. Start getting your stuff ready now for hunting season, it is quickly approaching.

How do you carry a sidearm on you when you are hunting?

I’m just curious why the switch to a different caliber when going out west? Is it for bears?

Yeah that would be my big concern. Griz are a LOT more aggressive than brown or black bear. I’ve had a few close encounter with Griz when I was growing up out west and it scared me to death.

I wish there was a picture of it being worn.

Long before the Haley Micro Rig was available I attached a Tactical Tailor Triple Mag Shingle to an HPG Runners KIT, mine had simple Mollie on the front panel. I used that rig for years as a minimalist/low profile training rig….

Stashed it away when Haley came out with their micro rig.. HPG are great people, went to their Winter Campout once….Great community.

I’ve been using a HPG Molle Snubbie as my hunting setup for 4 years. The front holds my bino case and a Blue Force Gear mag pouch as my phone holster for easy access utilizing Avenza maps. Clip the range finder to a loop on the side. Strap your pack over the top.
