    Well done, many salient points made, especially about the amateur radio hobbyists/purists who look down their noses at folks that do not view AR as a hobby, but as a serious tool/skillset for off grid/emergency communications.

    All of my kenwoods have been opened up and one of the reasons i like the baofeng/et al, ht’s and mobiles is precisely becasue of their wide rx/tx options, to use non AR vhf/uhf freqs…

    For those of you who don’t have a background/skillset in emcomm, i strongly encourage you to attend of NCS’s radio training courses, all of em in fact. I have done so many times over and always pick up a new trick or two, and it helps to keep the skills sharp.

    In two weeks i’ll camping in the smokies and will be setting up a fixed/base camp commo station, for signals intercept of local cb/frs/gmrs/vhf/uhf traffic, and setting up my ft-857 hf/uhf/vhf rig for rx and tx’ing..

    Gonna set up a sloping nvis long wire antenna for hf, and hang a j-pole from a tree for vhf/uhf comms..

    They make it seem as though it’s impossible to de encryption on HF, which is not at all true. You could certainly do a one time pad, but you could also use another application, say Mobi works “secret space encrypter” on the android tablet with which you are presumably VNC’ing the Pi with to run JS8Call in the first place. Copying and pasting back and forth between ANDFLMSG and and an encryption app is quite simple and has worked well for me. And with the HAM bands dying a slow death, there’s always a quiet frequency where you can pass a message back and forth to practice.

    @Capn Morgan…

    A simple book cipher would work well too…Old school but effective..
