Not any longer. The pendulum is being jerked, hard, back toward totalitarian rule.
The same technology which enabled the wealth (developed and controlled by the Robber Baron predecessors to today’s “elites”) that Mr Boaz falsely conflates with Liberty has given the wealthiest “elites” a power to control of which every tyrant in history could only have dreamt. That whole screed is so full of specious conclusions it’s laughable. Painted with the broadest brush I have seen outside actual .gov propaganda, of the sort that only historically ignorant uncritical folks could believe. It’s not his cherry picked facts that are wrong, it’s the broad leaps to his simplistic conclusions to which I object. Indigenous peoples the world over might agree.
The whole thing needs a line by line fisking but I am not volunteering. Not worth the effort and time.
The Liberty genii has been loosed however and may yet prevail, if those who see the problem clearly will act in their own defense.
I agree, much of it is pretty laughable. Just because master allows you some better conditions then he priously did or you had, does not mean you are freer then when you lived in a one room shack on property you really owned debt free.
That is conflating material conditions one lives with freedom one has. Many times slaves of the wealthy benefit immensely materialistically from that wealth, but it doesn’t mean you are any less a slave, it just means you are a pampered slave enjoying being a slave.
And of course the free trade and open borders, two of the things I have crossed swords with Libertarians of renowned many times, and one of my biggest contentions with them, has not made us more free or richer, it has indeed just in the short term made us pampered debt slaves, living in a plush gas chamber, that as time goes by makes it easier for the valve to be opened on us.
Certainly technology to some extent has helped us live longer, though that is even certainly on the decline, but that is also a strawman argument that it has anything to do with greater freedom.
The only real freedom that we have won, and I have been part of if not near the top of for some time (leastwise the modern origin of as far as “militia” reformation and armed carry), is the 2nd amendment movement, which is in my estimation, has been the most ardent freedom we could maintain and strengthen. And it is only that that keeps the valve from turning on the gas chamber.
