Ok… I dig her…
With that out of the way… My experience over the last 22-ish years is a little different.
She mentioned food grade buckets for storage, which are essential… but NOT air tight. 5 gallon Mylar bags with 2-3000 cc oxygen absorbers assist greatly with this method, but VARY GREATLY depending on the oil content of what you seal up.
The buckets prevent (somewhat) rodents from getting to the contents.
Canned Food:
The cans themselves:
The lovely Young Lady lauded “Pull Top Cans” as easy and convenient. They are. However, pull top cans will fail sooner than solid top cans. I can’t put a timeline on this as we ALL LIVE IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD WITH DIFFERENT STORAGE CONDITIONS.
OH… Be sure to have at LEAST 5 or 6 manual can openers if canned food is part of your storage, NOT the U.S. Military P-38’s either. You’ll starve or commit suicide if that’s all you’ve got. (just kidding, but they DO suck)
My experience in upstate New York with pull-top canned food is 3 years MAX. (55 degree basement with moderate humidity) Get into the habit of using these foods in everyday meals, and it won’t be an issue if you are rotating periodically.
The solid top cans are usually ok for me for 5 years. YOU SHOULD PULL A CAN EVERY YEAR and try it… just to be sure. The food might not be “bad”… but a metallic taste will suck… especially for kids!
Acidic foods and sauces (Tomato Sauce, Spaghetti Sauce, Peppers, etc.) will literally eat through the cans over time.
Try to buy these in glass jars. Even plastic jars of Ragu (you filthy savage) will fair better than cans.
Not to cut into the young lady’s Y/T revenue stream… Please check out the LDS (Mormon) on-line store. I haven’t ordered anything in quite some time… They were cheap, plentiful, and easy to deal with. They may be able to cover some staples for you!
God Bless.
