LibreWolf: New Year, New Browser, by SiliconValleySniper
It’s not easy to get Big Brother off your back these days. We’re seeing the tip of the iceberg with the Twitter Files. We now know for sure that Tier I government agencies (FBI and other agencies that don’t like to be named) spend their days monitoring and censoring average Americans. Liberal-leaning Big Tech colludes with pleasure, scheming to outright ban anyone committing what they consider a thoughtcrime.
So the threat to free speech is very real. Some of the most powerful folks in the world are behind it. Not a conspiracy any more, we have the receipts! Which motivates me to re-double my efforts to protect myself in this digital world. So when I stumbled upon a pre-hardened variant of Firefox, I got excited. Yes, I’m a nerd.
Here’s a bit of background, where I suggested a heavily modified Firefox, or if you didn’t want to bother then just download Brave. It’s not wrong, but I found a better option. Just download LibreWolf. If does all of the Firefox mods for you, all you have to do is upgrade from time to time. I never liked Brave’s sh*tcoin profit angle anyway. LibreWolf is open source (as all good privacy software should be).
Getting into the meat of it, you can install LibreWolf on Windows, Mac or Linux. Hopefully you’re on Linux, add the repository and enjoy. For Windows and Mac, it installs like regular software but you have to do the updates manually. There is a browser extension you’ll need to get notified of updates. Then update when it says to. This is more work than with the auto-updating Firefox or Chrome. Privacy is a pain, embrace the suck.
Now that you’ve upgraded, expect some websites to break. LibreWolf had pretty darned good documentation, so be ready to search through it when you get an error message instead of a website. Often you’ll find that the website has a security defect that other browsers ignore, not LibreWolf. Keep that old browser installed and switch back if you have to, with the newfound knowledge that the site has some defects.
There are a million more things to point out about this browser, the high notes are around blocking fingerprinting (who you are) and telemetry data (what you’re doing). Here’s the full list: https://librewolf.net/docs/features/
This is just one piece of the browsing stack. If you don’t have a VPN, do that first. Work on a robust firewall if you’re feeling ambitious. Stop using wifi when you can, hard-wired is always better. It takes time and effort, things are always changing. But don’t be deterred. Best way to learn is to do. Keep after it!
