The major difference between this shift and preceding caliber shifts is how many private weapons are chambered in these calibers, especially 5.56. I don’t doubt that this will change game somewhat, but I don’t see 5.56 commanding the prices in the future that 30 Carbine or 30-06 does now. There are just so many 5.56/.223 rifles, carbines, and pistols in private hands that it has created much more of a civilian market for military-derived calibers than we have seen before.
