I love the M-1 carbine. Fun piece of history thats still viable to protect ones family and community.

A carbine made by one of the eight WW2 prime contractors is still pretty useful today. Those made by post-war companies can be a crapshoot on getting a good one, as are current offerings.

After you get by the negative myths of poor results in Korea (low velocity ammunition coupled with missing the target at night), modern expanding bullets do the trick out far past typical home defense use. I call effective use of this gun to be about 200 yards, and 300 for a good shooter. The bullet is subsonic at that range.

The carbine provides a couple of benefits for newbie shooters and for those with weak hand strength. Compared to an AR, it is simpler to learn how to run an M1 Carbine. And its springs are light.

Prior to the advent of the AR for coppers, the carbine with good ammo was the go-to rifled weapon. There was a SOF magazine article from thirty years ago quoting a prison guard who said that fleeing felons never had to be shot twice to get a stop.
