Tesla owners in freezing Chicago stuck in ‘car graveyards’ as vehicles won’t charge
Tesla owners in Chicago were left in dire straits as they were unable to charge their cars because of freezing weather temperatures.
Fox Chicago reported that charging stations have become “car graveyards” as temperatures drop into negative double digits.
Tyler Bears, who had tried to charge his Tesla at a charging station in Oak Brook, Illinois, was stuck for hours.
He said: “Nothing. No juice. Still on zero percent.
“And this is like three hours being out here after being out here three hours yesterday.”
He was one of the many Tesla owners stuck in a long queue of cars waiting to be able to charge their vehicles.
Tesla owner Chalis Mizelle also told Fox Chicago: “This is crazy. It’s a disaster. Seriously.”
She added that she had to abandon her car and hitch a ride with a friend because her car wouldn’t charge.
Ms Mizelle added: “We got a bunch of dead robots out here.”
Kevin Sumrak told Fox that he landed at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday and found his car would not start.
Hr had to hire a truck to haul his car to a charging station that worked.
Mark Bilek of the Chicago Auto Trade Association said: “It’s not plug and go. You have to precondition the battery, meaning that you have to get the battery up to the optimal temperature to accept a fast charge.”
Tesla has not commented on the issues caused by freezing temperatures.

I live in that state. To renew your license plates it’s about $128 a year. For electric cars it’s about $1,128. Because they don’t pay gas taxes, that’s how the state makes up the money. Lot old my wife tonight come spring a lot of them will be sold.
Let’s put it this way. I have a nephew who is an electrical engineer. He wouldn’t own one even if he won it in a contest. On top of the reasons above, he says they are dangerous. He sited the autopilot problems Tesla has experienced & possible malfunctions that could occur while driving at high speeds. Stick with the tried & true internal combustion engine & keep the tank full, especially in winter. By the way, if you do live in a cold climate area, have a special winter battery installed. It’s more expensive, but new standard batteries have often failed in frost covered, sub zero temperatures.
