Everyone also needs to know that there are satellites that listen and relay both LoRa and LoRaWAN, which Meshtastic and variants use. Yes, your signals easily go that far straight up. You can also monitor what sats are “listening” and relaying…

And while you can disable the GPS on most of the Meshtastic nodes:
    https://meshtastic.org/docs/configuration/radio/position/
    https://meshtastic.org/docs/hardware/devices/tbeam/buttons/
it really does not make that much of a difference since each node has a fairly “local” signal range, so to find the node you are looking for, listen to the mesh traffic from any node, and then go wardriving to find the node you are looking for.

And if that is not warning enough, most of the other bands are monitored and triangulated (trilaterated) from space as well, by companies like HawkEye360 (HE360.com) and quite a few others now. And these systems easily listen to anything from upper HF through SHF, and are VERY accurate at not only pinpointing the locations, but reception of the signals (even digital like P25 and DMR), and the transmitter’s radio fingerprint.

Is using radios safe? Depends on what you do with that signal, what you use, and how you use it. LPI and other factors are the key, get your RTO/ARTO/SIGINT/EW/ECM training NOW, and then get out there and play with it till you can do it in your sleep. (And NC Scout’s courses would be a good place to start if you haven’t already done so). But what is going to help you continue to learn the “tricks of the trade” is to keep using and playing with the tech in the real world under real world conditions. Those “37 mile” radios at your local walwart are not going to get even close to that unless you can visibly see the other radio user. Most people will have to plan accordingly. You need to get out with your group OFTEN and find out what works and what does not. You also need to find out how far your signals bleed out into the distance to see how much of a threat level you are exposing yourself to. Again, play now or pay for it later.

And one more note: What is “allowed” as COTS now, has already been broken by the groups allowing it. This is true for encryption as well. VPNs, TOR and the rest, as well as systems like Meshtastic are “pushed” for a reason. Do your homework and start playing with things that are NOT “OTS”, and not limited…
