A wooden railroad trestle over the Squamscott River near Stratham New Hampshire was destroyed by fire late yesterday. This bridge is on a branch line of the Northeast Freight Line serving eastern NH and Maine. This spur is maintained principally to service the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where nuclear submarines are repaired, though it is infrequently used and will not have a major impact on the shipyard.
News reports are very general in nature, but the fire took place late in the day while a winter storm was underway and in a very remote location where the river opens up to the Great Bay Estuary. It is an impossibility that this can be anything but an arson attack. I assess this event as the likely work of regional @ntifa types and/or pro Gaza activists who have been staging protests near military sites in the region since 7 Oct 23. Greater Portsmouth in general and the University of NH at nearby Durham are hotbeds for these movements.
