Assuming Khamenei is actually dead, what happens when a figure arises in Iran to fill the vacuum who is not some old conservative, but an actual, fanatical hardliner?
A revolutionary radical who believes himself to be the Mahdi, or is, in some eschatological sense, actually the man to whom these Islamic prophecies are pointing. Obviously not an endorsement of Islamic theology, but an acknowledgement of distorted truths presenting themselves as geopolitical events unfold.
Seriously doubt that the 60% of the Persian people, especially the younger folks now celebrating the expiration of the mullahts will give shit about any of that. doubt that the IRGC will be in any shape to do much about it either while desperately trying to save their heads.
There are many secular Persians in the West, and many in Iran who are justifiably happy with the downfall of the Ayatollah, though how many of them are willing to bleed to rebuild the throne of the Shah, and a Shah who is very closely aligned with the Israelis (or their puppet), remains to be seen.
Admittedly, I doubt that the regime will just roll over, and I don’t doubt the religiosity (and fanaticism) of many in their ranks. Time will tell.
I omitted 60% of Persians “who are not muslim” They will see this as their last best chance to be free. They have already bled aplenty, historically and very recently. Here’s hoping vengeance is a thing….
