First you have to have the ability to detect plastic/fiberglass drones. The U.S. has no U.S. defensive radar nets. And only very close range IR detection. If we upgraded the aerostat balloon based radars to AESA standard- maybe. Then we would need aerostats positioned across all our borders. Then we would need pre-positioned Tucano’s . All that costs money. The program, while absolutely necessary, would only last until, some politician figured out how to cheapify the program out of existence, or figured out how to steal, or embezzle the program finds! Same reason the U.S. no longer has any functional radar net aroundit’s borders!
