Defense researcher Li Jin from Beijing’s top economic planning agency is pushing to turn civilian merchant fleets into a covert navy. Look closely at the cargo ship Zhong Da 79, which was recently spotted equipped with modular missile launchers and electromagnetic catapults.
In a piece published by a journal under China’s state defense administration, Li Jin urges the Chinese Communist Party to build a comprehensive database of civilian vessels, tracking their speed, tonnage, and crew data. He cites Britain’s rapid mobilization in the 1982 Falklands War as the blueprint for commandeering commercial shipping during wartime.
This isn’t just future strategy on paper. Beijing already tested this back in 2018 by using a 10,000 tonne civilian ferry to transport an entire military unit over 1,000 nautical miles. Meanwhile, ships like the 50,000 tonne semi submersible Zhen Hua 33 are designed from day one to switch into military support roles.
By turning everyday cargo vessels into modular strike platforms, CCP military planners are quietly weaponizing global trade networks. It puts peaceful merchant shipping and international supply chains in extreme danger.
