Florida Democrat Arrested After Threatening to Behead Fellow Dems Who Don’t Support DSA Senate Candidate Angie Nixon
A former Florida Democrat congressional candidate was arrested and charged with two felony counts of intimidation after he allegedly threatened to behead fellow Democrats and burn down their houses if they refused to support Marxist U.S. Senate candidate Angie Nixon.
Elijah Manley, 27, posted the unhinged threats on Facebook in August targeting two people, according to the arrest affidavit.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office was notified about two social media posts on August 21, the day after they were posted.
One of the victims provided screenshots of the messages to investigators.
In one of the posts, Manley stated: “I’m talking to yall. I saw yall comments earlier. I’m already pissed off, do not piss me off more. I swear to God, take me to war over this black woman and I promise yall I will burn y’all mf castle to the ground and anyone else in my way,” according to the affidavit.
Manley went on to post in another message: “This is the type of shii that will make me snap.”
The threatening messages appeared to stem from a disagreement about Nixon two days after Florida’s primary election.
“Any of you that don’t support Angie Nixon, I promise you, I will make your life a living hell to the very end,” Manley stated. “You better lineup behind the Democratic nominee like we always do.”
In a subsequent post, he stated: “Every democrat needs to get behind the democratic nominee for Senate. Anybody not doing that, I promise you I’m going to cut your f-cking head off,” the affidavit said.
One of the victims reportedly told deputies the threats had “placed her in fear.”
Although the posts had been removed by the time investigators documented the case, authorities said the messages were made Aug. 20 between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
At least two people provided statements to deputies expressing concern for their safety, according to the affidavit.
Manley surrendered to the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Friday and was booked into jail on two counts of written threats, which are second-degree felonies in Florida. He was released on a $40,000 bond on Saturday.
The Democrat has denied the allegations in a statement through his attorney, arguing the posts were protected First Amendment political speech rather than criminal threats.
“Mr. Manley has surrendered to authorities and has been released on conditions of bail. He denies the allegations. These are all allegations. The social media post in question was a discussion about politics that all parties had mutually engaged in over the course of weeks. We are confident that a trier of fact will see there is no intent to carry out any act of violence. It is unfortunate that our political differences have led some to weaponizing the police instead of using dialogue.”
Notably, the Broward State Attorney’s Office has recused itself from the case due to a conflict of interest and requested reassignment to another office.
The office said in a statement to Local 10, “the listed victims had participated in charitable drives organized by the Broward State Attorney’s Office over the years.”
Angie Nixon, who is vying for Republican Ashly Moody’s U.S. Senate seat, has her own issues with political violence.
The candidate runs “Cafe Resistance,” a Marxist-Leninist bookstore in Jacksonville that features a memorial wall honoring violent black militants, armed robbers, terrorists, and cop killers, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Nixon is behind Moody by more than seven points (49.7 percent to 42.4) in the RealClearPolitics polling average.
